State Trooper Backgrounds

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Just wondering what type of backgrounds most troopers have in terms of college or military experience and does that weight heavily in the hiring process.

Posted by: Foxy85

I think some troopers have a little from Column 'A' and a little from Column 'B'....

Posted by: PBC FL Cop

They are hired based on a test score.

College/military experience helps with test taking (whether it's critical thinking or VET points -- or both). After that, basically it's your own merit. Your background must be clean and you need to be somewhat good shape (although sometimes candidates get through -- it makes for funny moments at an RTT!) If you are invited to an RTT, it's all about if you have "it" or not. Financial reasons aside, once in an RTT the job is yours to earn or lose.
College/military can help get your foot in the door. Once in; it's up to you.

For any Troopers out there - when you decided on becoming a Trooper, were you coming from local PDs, other agencies, or completely different backgrounds? I’m sure for some of you it was your first opportunity to get into LE.

Someone made a similar post with the same thread name a month or so ago. Check the State Police forum

I think I decided I wanted to be a Trooper around age 5! I did 8 years Active Duty Marine Corps. Since then I tried the USMC Reserve (wasn't for me) and I have been in the Mass Army Nat'l Guard for 3 years (I'm currently activated and in Iraq). When I got out of the Marines,I worked about every job in Law Enforcement. Contract Housing Police in Boston, summer cop on the Cape, Dispatcher, Special, US Veterans Affairs Police, Local Cop. The only thing I can tell you is do well on the test, join the Military and get your Veterans status. Stay outta trouble (including tickets). If you get on a job, work really hard and do the right thing. Stay out of trouble, keep your nose clean on and off the job. Establish a good rep for yourself and good things will come.

They may like "sqeaky clean", but they don't always get it.

I'll re-phrase: Is MSP going to hire soon?

Posted by: WaterPistola

i wish, from all i've read on this great site for rumors and news, hiring won't happen until a new test is taken, which is still unannounced. i'm no expert but i don't believe they will take anymore off the 2002 list, again no expert. i would like to see a legitimate post or go on their site and see a test date as much as the next guy.

No money in the budget for another test in FY 2008.

Posted by: JMB1977

We will just be 1 of 15,000 taking and praying after the next exam!

Posted by: WaterPistola

Killjoys got a hair on the bum.
Don't worry they will make selections without your approval.

Posted by: jettsixx

Not surprised that this in no money in the budget for a test. Deval doesnt want anymore troopers they didnt support him in the race so now he's going to "get even".

That's rather funny...especially if you knew me.

Mass SP is not going away any time soon. There will be more tests and RTT's, people just need to play the waiting game. State's love to move at a snails pace.

Emerlad, you got something against hairy bums? LOL

Hey guys and girls. 18 year old male here from worcester. Was interested in the MSP someday....In college right now. Perfect background (unless tickets count ) eh.....not in shape at all. Is there such a position in the MSP where you can just patrol the MassPike and be like a traffic/highway cop/patrol? I would love to do that.

Posted by: WaterPistola
