MIAMI --
One Miami police officer is in stable condition and another is in critical condition after their cruisers collided early Monday morning.
Michael New, 27, and Garret Wing were responding to a call for backup when their cruisers collided at about 3 a.m. at the intersection of Northeast Second Avenue and 20th Street.
"He was T-boned and his car flipped over several times. He is in critical, but stable condition," said Sgt. Javier Ortiz.
New suffered massive internal bleeding and needed transfusions, said Ortiz.
Both were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
The Miami Police Department organized a blood drive for the critical officer in the hospital parking lot at 10 a.m. As of noon, more than 40 officers had donated blood.
"Everybody just got dressed and rushed to the hospital," Ortiz said. "The officer has family that doesn't live here, so we are his family. And so we're all here standing together giving blood in order to help him out."
Wing was one of the officers who apprehended John Lewis, a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Philadelphia police officer, last week at the Miami Rescue Mission. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The blood drive was to continue untl 10 p.m. in front of police headquarters at 400 N.W. 2nd Ave.
New's family was expected to arrive from Rhode Island Monday.
