PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — For at least the fourth time in the last two weeks, police have been fired upon.
On Saturday night a North Philadelphia man shot at a police cruiser and hit the windshield when the officers arrived and thwarted a shoot-out between two warring groups in Grays Ferry, said police Lt. Frank Vanore said.
The officers in the cruiser, who were not injured, returned fire and hit the suspect, Lashawn Reaves, 19, of 2400 block of West Master Street, in the right leg.
Reaves was treated and released from the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and charged with aggravated assault.
Also arrested was Christopher Flournoy, 19, of 2600 block of Oakford Street, who faces weapons charges.
The mayhem began about 7:30 p.m., when five to seven men were preparing to confront another group in the 1400 block of South 28th Street, near Reed Street, and the patrol car pulled up.
The others ran off as police gave chase. Vanore said the men were between 17 and 19 years old. A 9mm semiautomatic handgun was recovered.
"We're outraged that these individuals are turning and firing at uniformed police officers more and more. It's continuing and it's scary," Vanore said.
Police are searching for the others.
Less than two weeks ago, Officer Chuck Cassidy was fatally shot as he came upon a robbery in progress at a Dunkin' Donuts store on North Broad Street. John Lewis, 21, has been charged in the killing.
Besides the Grays Ferry case, there were eight other shootings over the weekend, including three homicides yesterday.
An 18-year-old man who was shot in the head in South Philadelphia Thursday night died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a victim in a triple shooting in which two other men, ages 19 and 20, were shot in the stomach.
Another homicide occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. yesterday in the 900 block of North Seventh Street in Northern Liberties. The victim was a 22-year-old man who was shot once in the head.
Then shortly before 5 p.m., a 30-year-old man was killed in the city's Overbrook section. The man was found on Oxford Street near 61st Street, shot twice – once in the buttocks and once in the back. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 5:39 p.m.
