SALARY: GS-5 = $33,534 to $41,688 per year; GS-7 = $38,174

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
-Selection for this position is contingent upon the conditions under the
Department of the Interior's hiring controls for recruitment, hiring,
placement and retention. THESE POSITIONS REQUIRE A 2-YEAR COMMITMENT FOR
NEW HIRES TO NATIONAL PARK SERVICE.

MAJOR DUTIES:

GS-5: This is the position of a trainee Park Ranger. The purpose of the
position is to provide training and experience in the work involved in the
Resource Protection Use Management Program of parks. Incumbent receives
intensive formal and on-the-job training, performing a variety of resource
protection and public use management assignments. Training assignments are
designed to prepare the Ranger for advancement to higher-graded ladder
positions and eventual assignment to a park's Resource Protection and Public
Use Management Program.

GS-7: This is the position of a non-supervisory Park Ranger in the Resource
Protection and Public Use Management Program. The Ranger in this position has
received formal and on-the-job training in general Ranger duties and
responsibilities and in the specific duties and responsibilities involved in
the Resource Protection and Public Use Management Program of the park. While
continuing to receive developmental assignments designed to prepare the Ranger
for higher-graded positions in the career ladder, the incumbent independently
performs an increasingly broader range of assignments related to the program
and to the overall operations of the park.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Selective Factor: All applicants must possess a current, valid National Park
Service Level II Law Enforcement Commission.

GS-5:
A. Completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's
degree with a major study in natural resource management, natural sciences,
earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation
management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences,
business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences,
sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and
protection of natural and cultural resources.
OR
B. One year of specialized experience comparable in level of difficulty and
responsibility to the GS-4 level in the Federal service performing duties
which involved communicating effectively with visitors and obtaining their
cooperation, identifying and reporting problems or apparent violations of
regulations concerning the use of protected or public land areas, and carrying
out policies and procedures within a recreational area or historical, cultural
or natural resource site.

C. Completion of a combination of education and experience described in "A"

GS-7 :
A. One year of specialized experience comparable in level of difficulty and
responsibility to the GS-5 level in the Federal service. This work must have
demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement techniques and methods, such as
patrolling, dispatching, investigating motor vehicle accidents, apprehending
violators; conducting preliminary investigations of felonies, crimes and
violations; and the ability to communicate, deal and work with people.

B. One year of graduate education with major study in natural resource
management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology,
anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science,
social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public
administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related
subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural
resources.

C. Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a
bachelor's degree with major study in natural resource management, natural

years of your undergraduate curriculum.
3. A "B+" (3.5. on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in

(b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum.
4. Election to membership in one of the national honorary societies (other
than freshman societies).

GRADE POINT AVERAGES: Grade point averages should be rounded to one

COMBINING EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Undergraduate - Divide your months of qualifying experience by 12. Divide your
semester hours of qualifying education by 120. Add the two percentages. They
must total at least 100% to qualify.

Graduate - Divide your months of qualifying experience
by 12. Divide your semester hours of qualifying education by 18. Add the two
percentages. They must total at least 100% to qualify.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One full year of graduate education is the number of
credit hours your college considers to be one year of graduate study. In the
absence of that information, 18 semester hours is considered to be one year of
graduate study. Only education and experience acquired by the filing date will
be considered. If your credits are given in quarter hours, convert them to
semester hours by multiplying your quarter hours by 2/3.

FOREIGN EDUCATION
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used
to meet the above requirements if you can show that the foreign education is
comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the

While true, I think there are 32 other sites they have in Boston. I think NPS owns the dock and the navy owns the Constitution

You need a current valid NPS level II Law Enforcement Commission to get hired... As far as I know UMASS Amherst is the only place to get it in Mass - basically a Part-Time Fish Cop Fed Academy. Costs about 2K or so and runs on weekends for a college school year. You can go to the UMASS Amherst Site to check it out. Having this lets the NPS hire you and see how you are before they spend any real $$ sending you to Glynco/FLETC.
