PITTSBURGH --
A Pittsburgh police officer Saturday shot a man who was trying to stab a K-9 police dog Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The man has been identified as 59-year-old Aucy Andrews of Pittsburgh.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:51 p.m.
Police said they were called to the 1600 block of Fifth Avenue where a man had been stabbed in the neck.
Officers said they found a 32-year-old man who was stabbed, and the victim and his fiancée identified the attacker as a man who was walking up the street.
The officer and his K-9 partner approached Andrews and attempted to detain him. The officer said he gave numerous verbal commands for him to stop, but he refused.
The officer said he deployed the police dog, and the K-9 grabbed Andrews' arm. He then brandished a knife and attempted to stab the dog, police said. The officer disengaged the police dog at that time, police said.
The officer said he continued to announce verbal commands to Andrews to drop the weapon, but he refused again and began to walk toward the officer with the knife in his hand, police said.
They said the officer told Andrews to drop the weapon once more before he shot and killed him.
The K-9 was taken to the Animal Rescue Clinic for treatment and was released, police said.
They said the K-9 was not injured.
The officer is an eight-year veteran with two years as a K-9 officer. He is now on administrative leave, police said.
