It's short notice, but, better late than never. Plus, it's free!!

Do a search before you start posting questions about this department, transferring back to MA, etc. It's all been talked about here already.

Yup took that test too, there were like 400 people they said.

Posted by: WaterPistola

hey did you stick around to get the answers? if so can you PM me?

Posted by: 209

12.50 an hour.....1200 per month for studio apartment....pay check goes from crap to negative crap .....ummm i think i'll pass

Posted by: AdamJ1984

Yeah, for the pay comparative to the cost of living it is outrageous. I did not even glance at taking the test because yes I want to become a police officer in every way, but not for less than a trashman makes.

1200? thats cheap, where was that queens?

Posted by: NBPD

probably brooklyn, I have a few family members on the department... It all depends where you live plus the environment is VERY different then out here but hey the pay is shyt when you first come on. It's not a bad test to take though. Good practice.

Posted by: WaterPistola

yeah i just took the test to take the test, no real possibility of taking the job and living on that kind of money.

Posted by: NegroRotary

Well i have family there, so rent won't be a problem, and for what I heard, the new contract will be near the 40k/year mark, so lets see if that is true.

Posted by: WaterPistola

when is the new contract being approved? should be about 45k but hey 40 is a lot better than 25.

Posted by: AdamJ1984

Well yes of course I can see people just beginning their career who have friends/relatives where living will be easier. But for someone like me, who would not want roommates, living on my own on that salary in that city, I guess I would have to stomach Ramen Noodles and bread for while.

Posted by: NBPD

yeah that is true.

Posted by: dcorn18

Did anyone get their scores yet, if so can you pm me if you got the answer key. thanks.

Posted by: PBiddy35

I took the NYPD exam in 2005 and got a 87 when they gave it here and I still get letters every few months. I think my score should have expired by now, I never moved further in the proccess. Funny though while I fight for a job around here I received an NYPD letter in late October mentioning me being in a January academy. Tempting as it is, theres no way I'd be able to pay the school loans AND rent. The fact that working hard and putting in time there is still going to max you out under 70K is just an insult to a historically respected job.

Posted by: JLT770

the test results i heard were good for 4 years, and theres some new program that will give you up to 15,000 a year to pay off your school loans i read on their website. that still leaves you with as mentioned above 1200 a month rent, unless you have housing there with a relative.

Posted by: FghtNIrsh17

Well you can always get food stamps. I had read an article a little while back that had said NYPD officers qualified for food stamps. What a disgrace to be in this line of work and qualify for food stamps. They wonder why no one wants to work for them and they turn down offers.

I took the NYCPD back in 1999, and was very impressed with the quality of the written test (some of the test I've taken look like they were written by a middle-schooler) and the speed of the application process. I received a call within a couple of weeks telling me my raw score (in the 90's, I can't remember exactly), and that I could begin the application process even without my veterans points. I did all the legwork, and went through the varying stages of the process, background, PT test, etc. They assigned a plainclothes officer as a sort of "mentor" to walk me through the application process. By January, I was all set to go to a March academy (I took the written exam in October), when I received a call from a Mass department and decided to go with them. Even when I told them, the NYCPD was understanding and said they would hold my score for a couple years.

Bottom line, I was willing to go anywhere to be a police officer, and didn't care much about pay or location. I found the NYCPD to have one of the most painless and rapid application processes I've ever witnessed. Every one I dealt with was nice and consumate professional. I'm not sure if I would of stuck with them, maybe I would left to go some other department. But having a few years with the NYCPD would have looked good on any resume.

its so fast and easy cause its not a good paying job! I would love to be a NYPD Officer for the experience alone but someone has to wake up and change the starting pay! food stamp eligible? WHAT!

Posted by: NegroRotary

We'll have to wait until January i think, i know the SGT's in that department now get pay 90K with the new contract.

Posted by: WaterPistola

well i got my results back, passed the test they want me in NYC on Monday, Dec 13...which is tough....especially for that pay. When does the new contract come out? if it comes out? Jan?

Posted by: JMB1977

I can agree...the applicant process is very quick. I tested there back a few years and could not relocate tyere at the time. I'm regreting it now.

Posted by: WaterPistola

i should probably call quest, but everyone is telling me not to, 32k the first year to live in the city...etc etc etc

Posted by: NegroRotary

WaterPistola, I understand where you coming from, i'm hearing that starting pay could be anywhere from 32-35K, as I know more, i will post it here...the reason i'm taking the job, if I get offer one, my family still there and I don't have to worry about rent or utilities, all i have to worry is to pay my child support. you can also find roommate, you can go to www.NYPDTrainees.com and you can find same people in your situation and maybe rent an apt or something

Posted by: WaterPistola

yeah i heard they put you up with 6 other recruits in a large room. it truly is the job that hates you back haha

Posted by: t21port

If you can afford to do it, than I would suggest that you take the job. I took the job 5 1/2 years again and love it. The money is going to be tough while you are in the academy, but when you get out the money goes up a little. But their is some ways to make money, collars for dollars. Also we have not had a contract for over 3 years. The city and police department went to PERB and the final meeting is in the beginning of January. So hopefully the salaries go up. If you have any questions about the NYPD please feel free to ask me. Also if you ever want to move back to MA its a great resume builder.

Posted by: NegroRotary

I sent you a PM

Posted by: WaterPistola

anyone remember the exam number needed for quest? i seem to have misplaced the sheet

Posted by: WaterPistola

Exam 7046
score 95.3
List number 29

Anyone have a clue as to what the list number means? am i on the 29th list? or 29th on the list? anyone currently on NYPD care to help me out?

Posted by: NegroRotary

you are #29 on that particular list, for exam 7046

Posted by: Foxy85

I think its funny that they require an Associates degree, but refuse to pay their officers decent salary

Posted by: WaterPistola

that's the new thing, they will pay up to 15,000 of your college debt, IF you stay for 5 years i think, 3k a year

Things have changed alot since 99 apparently because New York is way to big of a department to call everyone now and tell them their score. And they dont assigned plain clothes officers anymore to help with the process, although the seems like it would have been helpful.
