Several Worcester Police Officers Told Me That Worcester Is Not Hiering Off The List For At Least Another Year Do To Budget Problems. If They Do It Will Be Transfers.

Posted by: RCS

There was an article in the T&G last week about WPD hiring 28 sometime this May.

Posted by: Deuce

I'd tell those guys to reread the email from the chief...

Posted by: Foxy85

Worcester RARELY accepts laterals......

Posted by: Muscles879

I Talked To Some Officers From Worcester The Other Day And They Said If They Do Hire It Will Be Mostly Laterals. Whoever Said They Would Be Hirering Off The List Is Full Of Crap Because They Did That Before And Hierd Laterals. They Advertise To Everyone Because They Have To By Law. It Does Not Mean They Have To Hire All From The List.

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

Hiring laterals will become one of the only ways to get hired in Massachsetts. Pds that never did are now doing it. Simple economics, savea shitload of $$ and get good high quality seasoned trained officers.

Posted by: Foxy85

YOu can only shuffle around so many officer before you have to put on some new ones.... Unless you're a resident in Worcester, I wouldn't count on getting on with them.

As far as Worcester taking on laterals....I've been told its pretty rare, and when they do its in SMALL numbers.

Worcester is a pretty squared away department and the Chief is top notch. It truly is an awsome department.

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

Boston PD never did but now they did. I heard WPD will be taking some laterals.

Posted by: Foxy85

IF they do, count on some surrounding towns putting on some guys, I know a couple of out of town guys drooling to get on in Worcester....Good action, good pay, good guys....equipment could be better....

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

The only surrounding PDs that CS, are Holden.Shrewsbury,Millbury and Grafton. All make good $$$, not that many guys will jump ship to be stationed inside for a couple of years.

Posted by: Foxy85

I believe Leicster is CS too, but I could be wrong....

I meant nearby surrounding towns.... Northbridge as well, which is a skip, hop and jump away...

What do you consider good action? Being a resident and working here (MSP) I'd like to see NO ACTION.

Posted by: Foxy85

I live in Worcester too, but if you want lots of calls and stops, Worcester is it.....I mean South Main Street should just be quarantined and gased, that would knock out more than half the city's crime rate...what a shitty area of town....

Main South has no police solution. Only the judges can make the bad man go away. Plus, all the ass clowns you see coming in your doors at the court, walk right out the same day with a CWOF or Dismissed.

Don't forget the GBV...The guy who gets shot and needs your help one day, is the shooter the next day.

Posted by: Deuce

Yah, there's plenty of garbage for everyone. Main south? GBV? Shit man there's a small area of Worcester, from Salisbury St over to Pleasant St, Richmond Ave up to Paxton that's somewhat nice. And a real small area around Burncoat St. The rest of Worcester is shit and getting worse. Plain and simple...

Lots of calls? You bet, but it gets old real fast babysitting rottens you'd rather put a bullet in than waste ink on.. Lots of stops? Not really cuz we're too busy humping calls. And unless you habla espanol, African or Albanian your MV stops end in homicidal thoughts and NR's...

Would I recommend someone lateral over? No....

Posted by: Macop

eloquantly said deuce.

Posted by: Foxy85

Deuce.... 701 Main Street in Worcester...?

Thats just past the registry, which is crossing the "wrong side of the tracks"....

Worcester is good for a young guy starting out that wants to be busy....IMO

Downtown Worcester is shaping up....the shitbags walk the streets, but the actual area is cleaning up...Once that mall project starts up, it'll help revitalize worcester a bit. Also once the theatre opens up at Federal square it will bring a bit of class to downtown....Its coming along....I just think its funny... you'll have a ritzy theatre with off-broadway shows going on accross from the shit whole bar the Red Baron.....forcing the social classes to mix a bit....lol

That's where I found my little slice of the American dream. But of course that's where all our customers come for Halloween. "Wow, look at this rich neighborhood." It ain't rich, it just isn't littered with triple deckers and unregistered cars.

If you get on, 701 Main is the PIP shelter...where the upwardly mobile residents use your tax dollars to get a "jump start to success."

Dude, if you're thinking you're gonna see a Newbury Street extension or Faneuil Hall in Worcester, you're sadly mistaken. Worcester has a Plan E form of government, weak mayor, city manager and council system. There has to be a change to a strong mayor format with a person who has testicles (not Mrs Lukes, of course) to get things done. That City Square project is dead, the airport is a money vaccum, and I ain't waiting around for things to revitalize before SinePari Jr gets a little taste of the "action".

Posted by: screamineagle

I work in worcester, but live far enough out in the country where my kids wont see a drug deal on the corner, or know when a hooker is plying her trade. Not to mention its cheaper to live in the country.

Posted by: Deuce

Yah 701 Main St, the PIP. When I got on way back, it was called the Public Inebriate Program. Then they changed it to a neighbor friendly name of People in Peril. Bunch a shit. It's one of the city's, and the, biggest wet shelter. It's a cancer. Foxy if you think crossing Chandler St is crossing the wrong side of the tracks you're wrong. As in a guerilla war, there is no front, so there are no "tracks" to cross. Kid, you're already in it. You're among the scum and surrounded.

Downtown? Please, you see what's waiting for the bus in front of city hall everyday? That's a microscopic view of what's mobile all over the city. I guess Cityscape and the theater would be the equivalent of hiding a diamond in a pile of shit, or in Worcester's case, a rock up a junkies ass...

Worcester is about 30 square miles of Section 8, wet/dry shelters, Community Health Link, substance abuse/mental health program houses, WHA projects/housing and colleges. There is no tax base but the city councilors don't realize it or just ignore it or don't have the balls to go get it from the tax exempt and non-profits.. I'd like to agree with Sine about a strong mayor, but I don't think that'll help..

Which leads to monies, or lack there of, for public safety(except of course the ding dings). I'm not going to get into the internal politics, nepotism, favoritism and good ole boy BS prevalent in this dept. Or the inept leadership or external admin that lies to our faces and seems to like sodomy on a fairly regular basis.. But suffice it to say, except for certain divisions, the only money going to us is from Federal grants. I assume of course our problems are not unlike others..

Sine's right though and I wish him luck on getting Jr out.

After I got on they said we're going west, so I moved here from Framingham and got a much bigger/newer house in Worcester. But I wouldn't put my kids in their schools. My neighbor works for DYS, his wife is a public school teacher, and their kid goes to Doherty High School. You know what they tell me? Get outta this place. Now.

I took Sine Jr to Elm park one time and, just in a freakin' moment of clarity I thought something bad might happen. Sure as shit a hit 'n run took place a block away, and I watched this asshole tear-ass around the corner right at us on two wheels. That's a Hong Kong no-shitter right there.

I sit out in the parking lot waiting for the boss to run in and get some stuff at Walgreens, and I watch this dude put his hood up, walk in, run out (with the goods obviously) and the clerks give chase. Having family and Jr on board, I call it in and stay out of the mix.

I drive home AT THE END OF MY SHIFT and people flag me down for fights in the street. I gas up AT THE END OF MY SHIFT and the cashier runs out and tells me some dude flashed a gun. I go to Carboneaus on Grafton St to pick up my boots AT THE END OF MY SHIFT and there's a hooker and a base-head arguing over rock right in the school yard.

I sit at a detail at 290 near Brosnihan Square and 2 gang-banger wannabees are shooting it out right above my head on the Harrison St over pass. The shells landed right next to my car. These are everyday happenings without anyone picking up the phone and calling 911. I'm sure anyone from any city can tell similar stories.

How about the actual calls for service? J'ever think about the shit you're gonna deal with? How about the one nice very young girl from another suburban town, getting choo-choo trained down at the GBV, because she's all tuned up with coke or heroin. How are you gonna tell her mommy and daddy that daddy's little angel has lost her wings? That's a true story, just like that movie "Traffic".

Listen to the scanner, young Court Officer, and you'll hear all the action you want, but once you have to actually GO to those calls and see the dark side of the city you'll want to work in some other utopia.

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

The surrounding PDs around Worcester are basically border patrol officers and try to keep the shit in the shit.

Posted by: Foxy85

I don't know. As young guy I want to get in the thick of things. Maybe I learn when its too late, and I am stuck with the job, and cursing myself for not listening to the guy on the internet, but for now, I still think it would be fun/interesting/fast-paced/and exciting to work in Worcester.

Honestly, I'll take a job from who ever offers first, but I still think Worcester would be an awsome city to work in. Raising a family in, a totally different story...

I hear ya. It's called piss and vinegar. I'm not dissuading you, just enlightening you. The majority of calls seem to be BS. But that's with any department I guess. Police work is like that old saying for other things - 95% boredom and 5% sheer terror/excitement/chaos or whatever adjective fits there.

Hell, when I took the CS exam I put Worcester down also and I didn't know anything about the place. I figured bigger department = better chances of getting on, and maybe get to see some shit I wouldn't see in other towns, etc. So I'm not putting you down by any means.

Posted by: Muscles879

What Towns Are Hiring A Lot Soon??

Posted by: Foxy85

Try switching over to the employment section.....then check the CS exam scores thread

Dude, like Sine said, I would never dissuade someone from this job. I know how hard it is to get on and if you get the opportunity grab it. Just parlaying some knowledge, for what it's worth. And ya, I'm just some guy on the internet. For all you know I'm a 10 y/o from Thailand. And if I told you the happenings of the WPD and the city, you'd think I was some insane moonbat.. But yes, if you get on the list and can get into the academy obviously take it. Then after a few months you can make your own judgement on all those adjectives you just dropped..

Posted by: Foxy85

LoL will do...I'm 151 Over all on Worcester's list, not sure how quick they burn through their list though...

Not true. They are sending cards out. Anyone else on the certification list?
Is it normal for them to send cards to non-residents?

Posted by: okie317

At the orientation in 2005 they said they had never reached the non residents on the list. Also I was just looking at the list and the first non resident on there is a D-Vet and they are still very far down, what is your ranking?

I'm in the low 300s and I'm about half way down the certification list. It looks like about 500 people will be getting a card.

I went to Worceter today. They said they only wanted 150 off the list for 29 positions, not 500.

Edit

Posted by: okie317

Yeah that sounds about right it was 150 last time for 35 positions.

Posted by: Foxy85

How do they decide though......with the banding system...some people with the same score probably won't get a card......that sucks....

On a side note, hows Worcester's Police academy, compared to Boylstons? Whats the difference? Tougher academics? Tougher PT? Tougher all around, or about the same, they just have their own because of the amount of recruits?

What difference does it make? Will you prepare less or more based on what some guy on the internet tells you?

Most people do just that.

Actually I was just curious as to what the consensus was concerning my questions about the academy.....not a big deal....

Did you end up dropping the pounds, Tubby? Worc PD conducts a very thorough background check for their academy candidates. So, if in grade school you were stealing Twinkies or bullying little kids for money so you could buy your 4th lunch, WPD will know. Good spelling is always a plus.

Posted by: Foxy85

You got me, I was the one stealing the twinkies in the 4th grade....

How clever....

Muscles is the know all of Worcester P.D. clearly....Anyway, did you ever think that people on the C.S. list are from non-c.s. depts. that already have the FT academy.....

And I was told by one of the B.I.'s for WPD that they didi call the first 70 names...
