PHOENIX, Ariz. — A man died in police custody Thursday after his hands were cuffed and legs restrained in Phoenix.
The man, 41, was arrested and restrained before he went into medical distress, according to Sgt. Joel Tranter, public information officer for the Phoenix Police Department.
The man, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital were he was pronounced dead.
Two officers were called to a home near 900 West Monte Way after receiving a 911 call from the residents, according to a press release.
The man was apparently creating a disturbance and attempting to break into an occupied home and a parked car, according to calls from residents. The officers arrived and found the man without a shirt and in the middle of the street, according to the release.
The man resisted arrest and was cuffed behind his back, the release said. His legs were restrained after he kicked and thrashed at the officers.
No Taser was used on the man. Phoenix police are investigating the death.
This is the sixth person to die in police custody this year.
The most recent was Archie R. Poole Jr., 41, of Tolleson, who stopped breathing and died after struggling with Phoenix police officers on Oct. 4.
In a well-publicized case, Carol Gotbaum, 45, died Sept. 28 after she was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct at Sky Harbor International Airport and placed in a holding room.
