DAVIS COUNTY, Utah Davis County sheriff's Deputy Cory Cox knew something was wrong when he clocked a car with emergency flashers going 95 mph on U.S. Highway 89.
As the car sliced through northbound traffic, Cox flipped on his own emergency lights and pursued the vehicle at speeds upwards of 100 mph at 4:25 a.m. on Monday, he said.

"I immediately thought that it may be a medical problem," said Cox, who has been with the sheriff's office for 10 years.

His training prepared him for what he found when he approached the stopped vehicle.

"I could hear her screaming out in pain," Cox said of Yeojin Hong, who was minutes away from delivering her second child. "The focus then turned from a law enforcement side, to a medical side."

As the deputy began asking medical questions of Hong, 7-pound, 13-ounce Clair was preparing her grand arrival. Three minutes later, the healthy baby was born.

Hong and her husband Young Jeon recently moved from Ogden to West Jordan, but kept their doctor at McKay-Dee Hospital - more than 50 miles away, Cox said.

"They thought they had plenty of time. [But] when they got to the Farmington area, her water broke," the deputy said, noting that the couple's son and Hong's mother were also in the car.

"As a patrol officer and deputy, all of us are also trained as paramedics. I knew it would come in handy some day, but didn't expect that night," Cox said of his training in childbirth.

"As a father and a paramedic, it's an extremely amazing position to be in. I was grateful to help them out," he added.
