10 Hr Shift Schedules?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Our department is looking into 10 hour shift schedules at our PSAP. We are currently short handed and are looking at alternatives to our 12's.

If anyone is utilizing a 10hr shift schedule, any thoughts and or comments would be great.
We are also looking for a sample 10 hr schedule.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Michelle,

Our agency does not have a full 10-hour system in place. We have mainly 8x, with 2-10 hour positions 6a-4p, 4p-2a on Days and PM's as "midwatch" coverage, so shift changes go more smoothly. Also the early-start, and late-ending times correspond with a.m. rush hour, and "last call" at the bars, respectively.

While the "coverage" aspect works ok for us, these shifts are virtually impossible to fill as OT due to schedule conflicts with people on the 8's. We "make do' an 8-hour fill (or a 6 if coming from a 10-hour field spot). My advice, go all 10's, or 12's.

If you go into the APCO discussion forums and search "schedules", I believe there are sample 10x schedules, as well as 12's.

North Reading and Winchester, the two I know have a 4 on 4 of schedule ,10 hour days schedule.

I know N. Reading has officers that do the dispatch. I think they break it up, so one guy is not on the desk for 10 hours.
