Trading Gas for Guns in Cleveland

CLEVELAND --
An effort to stop crime and make our streets safer is about to get under way.
A gun buyback program is set for this Saturday in Slavic Village, a Cleveland neighborhood that is battling a crime wave.
Two things soaring in Cleveland right now are gas prices and the number of homicides caused by people with handguns, and the city is hoping to reduce the costs of both, reported NewsChannel5's Curtis Jackson.
The program is called Enough is Enough. The gun buyback offers a $100 gas card instead of cash.
Police said such efforts make our streets and homes safer, getting guns out of homes where children can find them, and injure themselves or someone else.
It's been almost a year since a 12-year-old found a gun and killed his 11-year-old cousin Quintus Oates.
He's just one example of why police and city officials want people to come to the Convention Center on Saturday and take them up on the offer.
The first 450 will get the $100 gas card.
The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the convention center's service entrance, off of St. Clair Avenue.
There have been 118 homicides in Cleveland so far this year. That is one fewer than the total number of homicides in 2006.
