MILFORD, N.H. -- A 64-year-old woman was raped at knifepoint early Sunday morning in Milford in what police are calling one of the most disturbing crimes they've investigated.
Police said the woman was approached in the Milford Oval downtown area by a man with a knife who sexually assaulted her. Investigators have released few details but said they wanted to warn residents of the incident.
"We want to preserve the rights of the victim," Chief Fred Douglass said. "We take these cases very seriously, and we do not want to give out too much."
The attacker is described as a white man with medium to dark skin, a slender build, and 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
Police said he assaulted the woman outdoors and ran away on foot after the attack.
Residents of the town of 14,000 said they were shocked and angered by the assault.
"It really is an act of total depravity," resident Russ Monbleau said.
Police said the woman hesitated to report the attack, waiting a day before driving herself to the police department. Experts said an unwillingness to report sexual assault is not uncommon.
"The elderly population is less likely to seek services than younger people are, coming from a climate of, 'Let's not talk about it,'" rape counselor Melissa Matthews said.
Matthews said this sort of attack is rare because in more than 80 percent of rapes, the victim knows the attacker.
"It's unfortunate that these are the types of cases that get covered by the media, because it paints the picture of not feeling safe in your own town," she said.
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Milford police at 603-673-7717.
