Hopedale man, 21, charged with breaking into cars on High St.

By Patriot Ledger staff

CARVER - A Hopedale man has been charged with breaking into cars on High Street.

Detectives went to the North Carver neighborhood around 6:30 a.m. Monday after receiving calls from residents that their cars had been vandalized and items taken.

Neighbors reported seeing a man in his 20s wearing a blue coat and carrying a black bag in the area.

Detective David Zadok later spotted a man who fit the description.

Police said the man told the detective that he was having car trouble and walking to Wareham.

The detective then noticed that the man’s bag contained a similar bottle of cologne that had been been taken from one of the cars.

Police said the detective also saw that the man had a portable radio like one that had been stolen from another car in the neighborhood.

The suspect, who allegedly gave police a phony name, was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property worth more than $250.

He was later identified as Jeffrey L. Duhamel Jr., 21.

During the investigation, police learned that several cars in the area had been vandalized and money and jewelry stolen.

Police also found a car that had been reported stolen in Milford.

Duhamel was wanted in the Milford area for breaking and entering and larceny charges, according to police.
He was arraigned Monday in Wareham District Court on various charges in connection with the break-ins.

Police said witnesses provided help that led to Duhamel’s arrest.

The Plymouth County Bureau of Criminal Investigation and K-9 unit assisted local police in the investigation.

Police said residents should be reminded not to leave valuables in plain view in their cars.
