BRAINTREE - Police have obtained arrest warrants for two men who allegedly passed two counterfeit traveler’s checks at South Shore Plaza last week.
Police said Irwin Stampley, 43, of Mattapan and Christian B. Amado, 20, of Fall River will be charged with possession of a counterfeit traveler's check, forgery, passing a forged document and larceny of property worth more than $250. Stampley will also be charged with attempting to commit a crime.
Stampley and Amado each allegedly used a counterfeit $500 American Express traveler’s check for separate purchases at Macy’s on Oct. 25. They pocketed the rest in cash, police said.
‘‘Retailers should be aware that $500 American Express traveler’s checks are rarely sold, and any American Express gift check denomination in excess of $100 is counterfeit,’’ Deputy Police Chief Russell Jenkins said.
He said a third check was also passed, but the sale was denied when the sales associate became suspicious.
Meanwhile, police officer Sean McConville was already investigating a similar traveler’s check cashing scheme earlier in the day at Filene’s Basement.
In the Filene’s case, a man, who was with a woman, tried to pass a $500 traveler's check, but the transaction was denied.
Surveillance video from both stores confirmed that the man in the Filene’s incident was Stampley, police said.
Police said they were able to identify all three people at the two stores from information left by Stampley and Amado. The woman with Stampley at Filene’s won’t be charged, police said.
