STOUGHTON— Robert E. Letendre, acquitted by a jury on two charges of corruption in July, has returned to work as a Stoughton police officer.
Town Manager Mark S. Stankiewicz said Letendre returned to duty recently after completing a physical exam and firearms re-certification.
Stankiewicz said a review of transcripts from the five-week trial in July showed no direct evidence of Letendre having violated Police Department rules or procedures.
“The transcripts were reviewed by (acting Police Chief Christopher Ciampa). The chief found there was nothing meriting disciplinary action,” Stankiewicz said.
Letendre will receive his full salary of $58,300 and benefits, Stankiewicz said.
On July 31, former Stoughton police Sgt. David M. Cohen was found guilty by a jury in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham of attempted extortion and witness intimidation.
The charges stemmed from two incidents, one involving a used car salesman in January 2000, and another a businessman soliciting venture capital in April 2002.
The criminal complaint said that Cohen arrested the businessman, Timothy A. Hills, in May 2002 in an effort to force him to pay a $10,000 debt owed to a friend of Cohen's.
The jury found co-defendant Letendre not guilty on charges of being an accessory after the fact to a kidnapping and filing a false report relating to the January 2000 incident.
Police Chief Manuel J. Cachopa is still awaiting trial on charges of corruption in connection with both incidents involving Cohen.
