An Acushnet man is being held without bail after being arrested on gun charges last week by state police.
Michael J. Arabian, 22, of 835 Middle Road is charged with carrying a .22-caliber revolver, loaded with six bullets, in front of a residence on North Front Street in New Bedford Friday night.
He was arrested after state troopers who had stopped a motor vehicle in front of 505 N. Front St. saw him standing outside the residence with the gun's wooden handle protruding from his waistband, according to court records.
Upon seeing the troopers, Mr. Arabian allegedly fled inside the residence and up three flights of stairs to a third-floor apartment, where, police said, he tried to hide the loaded revolver under a mattress.
New Bedford police officers and Southeastern Massachusetts Gang Task Force personnel responded to provide backup to the troopers, who were assigned to the Massachusetts State Police's Community Action Team.
The troopers entered the apartment. Upon being seen exiting a bedroom, Mr. Arabian allegedly told the police he had run because he was on parole for a previous drug case and had been drinking, court records said.
Troopers entered the bedroom and pulled up a mattress, where they found the revolver with the live ammunition, police said.
A woman who lives in the apartment with two young children told police she did not know about a gun in her bedroom. When she saw the weapon, she reportedly said: "Oh, my God. Oh, my god. My kids."
Mr. Arabian had no license to carry a firearm, court records said. A check of the revolver's serial number did not turn up any record of it having been stolen.
Mr. Arabian is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without an FID card, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
He is scheduled to return to court Nov. 13 for a dangerousness hearing that could result in his being held without bail until trial.
