NEW BEDFORD — Police executing an arrest warrant Tuesday captured the suspect in two of last week's five convenience store robberies.
Michael Patrick Hammerle, 43, was apprehended around 6 a.m. at 9 Bedford St., where he was staying with a girlfriend, according to New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silva.
"He was taken into custody without incident," Lt. Silva said.
Mr. Hammerle, a Fall River native with a long criminal record that includes convictions for drug possession, larceny and failing to appear in court, is charged with one count of armed robbery for the Oct. 29 incident at the Walgreens pharmacy at 1091 Kempton St.
He is accused of entering the drugstore wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and threatening a clerk before escaping with the cash drawer.
According to court records, the Walgreens clerk identified Mr. Hammerle from a police photo lineup last Friday. New Bedford police included his picture after Dartmouth police investigating the Oct. 28 robbery at Bliss Express identified him as a suspect.
Mr. Hammerle is also suspected of being the man who drew a knife at the Bliss Express clerk and stole the cash drawer. He matches the description of the suspect whom the clerk said had a "boxer's nose," police reports said.
Citing his criminal record and deeming him to be a flight risk, a district court judge ordered Mr. Hammerle held on $75,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to return to court Dec. 3.
Court records said Mr. Hammerle had established residence in Vermont, but police could not say how long he had been living there. His previous address is at 858 Middle St. in Fall River.
Police have not yet determined if Mr. Hammerle was involved in three other convenience store robberies last week. Those robberies include the 7-Eleven at 1389 Phillips Road and the Cumberland Farms at 810 Rockdale Ave. on Oct. 31, as well as a Nov. 3 armed robbery at Summit Grove Laundry in Dartmouth.
In those robberies, a white man armed with a knife threatened to stab the store clerks unless they opened their cash registers. However, that suspect's physical description does not match that of Mr. Hammerle. Witnesses said the Summit Grove Laundry robbery suspect was 5 feet, 5 inches tall; Mr. Hammerle is almost 6 feet, police said.
The suspect who robbed Summit Grove Laundry also did not have a "boxer's nose," according to Dartmouth police.
New Bedford police arrested Mr. Hammerle on Tuesday with the assistance of the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section of the Massachusetts State Police, Lt. Silva said.
"We work with these guys a lot and they know exactly what to do. They go with overwhelming force so resistance would have been futile," he said.
