Trooper from Abington honored for actions at condo fire

BOSTON - State Police Trooper Mark K. Wheeler of Hanover has received the superintendent’s commendation for his actions in an April 7 condo fire.

He was honored in a ceremony Friday at the State House.

The four-alarm fire broke out at 2 a.m. at the Hawthorne Hills condo complex in Danvers.

It spread to adjacent units occupied by elderly and mentally handicapped residents.

Wheeler, who joined the State Police a year ago, went door to door with other officers to evacuate the residents from the burning condos.

Wheeler graduated from Hanover High School in 1999 and received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. Anselm College. He is stationed at the Danvers State Police barracks.

Other law enforcement personnel to receive awards included Trooper Joshua J. Fries, Plymouth; Sgt. Michael F. Rafferty, Rockland; Trooper Mark E. Burke, Plymouth; Trooper Kevin M. O’Neil, Weymouth; Trooper Keith E. Pantazelos, Abington; Lt. Thomas D. Grenham, Marshfield; Sgt. William E. Deary, Norwell; Trooper Gary L. Berlo, Plymouth; Trooper Jared A. Gray, Weymouth; Trooper Joseph A. Gray III, Rockland; and Trooper Kenneth W. Rudolph, Plymouth.
