WESTPORT, Maine --A car accident is under investigation that killed a Coast Guardsman on Westport island early yesterday morning.
The Coast Guard says David Smith was traveling southbound on Route 144 shortly before 2 a.m. when his car crossed into the northbound lane, entered a ditch and struck a tree.
Smith was in charge of the Coast Guard station in Boothbay Harbor.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
