ABBEVILLE, SC (AP) - A jury has found a woman guilty of helping her son kill two law officers over a strip of land the state wanted to take for a highway project in Abbeville.
Jurors found 75-year-old Rita Bixby guilty of accessory to murder and conspiracy in the December 2003 deaths of the two officers. She was sentenced to life in prison.
Prosecutor Jerry Peace says Bixby wasn't home at the time of the shootings but knew her husband and son planned to shoot anyone who came on their property.
Bixby's son, Steven, was sentenced to death for shooting sheriff's Sergeant Danny Wilson and state Constable Donnie Ouzts.
Her husband, Arthur, is awaiting trial. He is charged with two counts of murder. The officers were gunned down when they came to serve seizure papers.
