PBC ya know anything about them or Jax?

Ok my ignorance is showing, if they're employees under a Sheriff why are they police officers and not deputies?

Posted by: 94c

Because the Police patrol the unincorporated areas of Jacksonville and the Deputies are behind the wall where they belong.

As least they do it right down south.

This is a "metro" department. What does that mean? They are all under one hat. And it is one large agency, with alot of stuff to do. Nice area of the state too. You're a little further north so it actually cools down in the "winter" months.

The city of Jacksonville merged with Duval County, so now they are all considered police officers. The same situation exists in Miami-Dade county, where they eliminated the elected sheriff and went to an appointed Director for the Miami-Dade Police Department. The head of the Miami-Dade police has the title of "Director and Metropolitan Sheriff" of Miami-Dade. MDPD badges say "Police Officer" and "Deputy Sheriff" so they retain the authority of both, although deputy sheriff is the higher authority over police officer.

They are the only two counties in Florida, where the sheriff is NOT elected.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is a large and busy agency, they usually lead the state in homicides every year. The Jacksonville area in very Southern. Two guys from my bureau recently transferred to the Jacksonville Bureau and were in a culture shock. It's a lot less congested than South Florida and the cost of living is cheaper as well. I have to go to Jacksonville next month for the first time, so I'll have a better perspective of the area. It's about a five hour drive from Palm Beach.

Las Vegas MEtro same thing, they merged Las VEgas PD with Clark County Sheriff a while ago.

It seems to be the trend, Indianapolis police recently merged with the Marion County Sheriff's Office as well. It was an interesting how the merger took place. The following link details the coming together of the police and sheriff's office to create the Indianapolis Metro Police Dept.

I've heard good things about the Jacksonville area and the force up there. Like MIT said you'll get cooler winters, which is nice down there.

Gotcha thanks.

Soo, how was it?? After the last few days I'm ready to go now...

Jacksonville is a very busy city, traffic was horrible and it is also a lot colder than S Florida!!

South Florida is much nicer, I would choose this area over North Florida all day long.

Happy shovelling

Depends on which part of Florida you live in. S FLA, 38k would be tough and it would also depend on the agency and the availability for OT, details etc.

They actually work for a state agency assigned in Jacksonville, not the SO, but they seem to like the area for the most part.

FDLE?

Brought the fam down to St. Johns/St. Augustine a couple months ago. Real nice area, not as hot (that just sounds weird) as southern FL. Kinda suprised us as how expensive the cost of living is. But nice area all the same. We wanted to check out Jax but ran out of time. Maybe next time.

Stay warm bud...

Next time come to Palm Beach, I'll give you a S FLA guided tour. 50 degrees in S FLA is a very cold day. This morning I was driving to work and it was 62. I saw people walking their kids to school wearing stocking hats and gloves!! After 6.5yrs here, my blood is starting to thin out too, yesterday it barely reached 75 and I found myself wearing a jacket. Thankfully this weekend it will be back up to 80 where it should be. We had our Xmas gathering today at a Tiki Bar, ya gotta love S FLA

They were for a while, they even considered merging with BSO. I know they are on a big recruitment right now. It's a buyers market right now and there are a lot of good deals around. BSO is also hiring and they just had a huge administration change, so hopefully things will start to improve over there.
