Subject: Military Fatality Statistics

The data is correct. Check the link at the end. You will be surprised. Why has the media not complained before the Iraq war? These are rather eye-opening facts:

As tragic as the loss of any member of the US Armed Forces is, consider the following statistics. Annual fatalities of military members while actively serving in the armed forces from 1980 through 2004:

>> 1980 .......... 2,392
>> 1981 .......... 2,380
>> 1982 .......... 2,318
>> 1983 .......... 2,465
>> 1984 .......... 1,999
>> 1985 .......... 2,252
>> 1986 .......... 1,984
>> 1987 .......... 1,983
>> 1988 ....... . 1,819
>> 1989 .......... 1,636
>> 1990 .......... 1,508
>> 1991 .......... 1,787
>> 1992 .......... 1,293
>> 1993 .......... 1,213
>> 1994 .......... 1,075
>> 1995 .......... 1,040
>> 1996 .......... 974
>> 1997 .......... 817
>> 1998 .......... 826
>> 1999 .......... 795
>> 2000 ......... 774
>> 2001 ..........890
>> 2002 .........1007
>> 2003 .........1,410 ----- 534*
>> 2 004 ........1,887 ----- 900*
>> 2005 ......... 919*
>> 2006 ........ 920*
>>
>> (Figures are Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom Fatalities only.)

Does this really mean that the loss from the two current conflicts in the Middle East are LESS than the loss of military personnel during President Clinton's presidency? Were we at war? Are you confused when you look at these figures?
>>
Especially look at 1980, during the reign of President "Nobel Peace Prize, Jimmy Carter" himself, there were 2,392 US military fatalities.

What this clearly indicates is that our media and our politicians pick and choose, and they tend to present only those facts that support their agenda-driven reporting.
>>
>> Another fact our media and politicians like to slant is that these brave men and women losing their lives are minorities. Wrong again - The latest United States of America population census shows the following:
>>
>> European descent (white) ..... 69.12%
>> Hispanic .... 12.5%
>> African American ..... 12.3%
>> Asian ..... 3.7%
>> Native American ..... 1.0%
>> Other ..... 2.6%
>>
>> Now, the fatalities over the past three years in Iraqi Freedom are:

>> European descent (white) .....74.31%
>> Hispanic .....10.74%
>> African American ..... 9.67%
>> Asian .....1.81%
>> Native American.....1.09%
>> Other ... 2.33%
>>
>> The bottom line is, you can not rely on Newspapers, radio, or TV news sources to divulge the news facts it really happened. The truth in reporting the war is also a casualty.
>>
>> During World War ll it was not unusual the 8th Air Force in England to have a thousand or more fatalities in one day on some of the raids. There were over 400,000 fatalities in the US Armed Forces from December 7th 1941 at Pearl Harbor to August 9th 1945 - VJ Day in the Pacific.

>> These statistics are published by DOD and may be viewed at:

Not surprising at all...serving in the military, whether peace or war, is a dangerous profession. You put young people on or near immensely fast, powerful or explosive machinery and weaponry and see what happens. I suspect the higher casualty ratios from the 80's are from the much larger size of the armed forces in that decade....you can blame the Clinton's for turning the most powerful armed forces in the world to the shadow of its former self it is today.

Thanks for posting this FL COP.

I get into heated arguments all the time with the wife over this issue. This nation was built on the blood of patriots and man I hate to see one troop lose his life, but considering all the missions and the fact that they are fighting in an asymmetric warfare type environment our losses have been extremely low. I mean no disrespect to those that have lost loved ones, even one is too many for us, but I’m sure they would want us to have the stomach to drive on and complete the mission.

Well as you can plainly see, figures lie, and liars figure.
Go back to the Klinton years. The numbers drop sharply. They do so because "cum stain Bill" basically cut the military in half. Less people in the military, less people training / drinking off base = less accidents..... Also means less fatalities with personnel.

Any military death is tragic, with that we would all agree. A couple weeks before D-Day in 1944 we lost 4,000 men in a military exercise in the English Channel when a couple German E-boats slipped in and torpedoed a couple of US troop ships. 4,000 men in one night as opposed to almost 4,000 in 4 years of bloody conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Don't see Pelosi & Murtha crunching those numbers, do you?

We lost almost twice as many Marines at Iwo Jima than we have total forces in the GWOT. Let's go Hippie Hunting.
