Urge college heads to punish mischief-making students

By Michele McPhee

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Mayor Thomas M. Menino are calling on college administrators to expel trouble-making college students convicted of crimes related to chaos in Fenway Park [map].
Davis said he is talking to university heads in and around Boston to hold students accountable for any criminal behavior - including setting fires and assaulting cops - with sanctions that could include suspensions or expulsion.
It’s a plan that is also backed by Menino, who cited the melee in 2004 that led to the death of 21-year-old Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove - an innocent bystander - who was killed accidentally with a pepper pellet fired by a Boston cop trying to squelch the mayhem around Fenway Park after the Red Sox [team stats] took the ALCS from the Yankees
“The colleges need to do their part to discourage criminal behavior from college students,” Davis said. “We are asking for serious sanctions for students.”
After Sunday night’s pennant win over the Indians, 26 people were arrested. Of those busted, 17 were college students, according to Boston police incident reports reviewed by the Herald. In court on Monday, Roxbury Judge Ed Redd ordered seven of those students to write five-page essays describing their experience.
Menino said he was hoping to send a stronger message to students who misbehave and assault cops.
“I respect Judge Redd, but these are crimes,” Menino said.
Meanwhile, there was a significant police presence ringing Fenway Park by late yesterday afternoon. Davis insisted that there were no direct threats made against the World Series, but homeland security cops were a key component to the police presence around the ballpark last night.
“Due to the national significance of the World Series, the BPD will also be vigilant for issues related to homeland security concerns. BPD has no intelligence or specific information to suggest that there is a threat to homeland security,” Davis said.
Cops were also walking through bars and restaurants to make sure crowds were not getting rowdy. Menino said it was all part of enjoying the game, which he planned to watch from a corporate box.
“I’m trying to learn to dance like Papelbon if we win,” Menino said. “I don’t know if I can pull it off.”

This is long overdue. Many college administrations coddle their students, wrap them in blanket of protection and treat law violations on and near campus as petty offenses to which they hand out taps on wrists and stern warnings which only further the sense of entitlement many of these students have. Alcohol, drug and vandalism violations are crimes and should be treated as such. Using both the law and strong college discipline to deal with rowdie students will do much to make campus life the true learning environment it should be.

Maybe the judges should do their part as well. A five page paper for throwing rocks at police, what the hell kind of sentence is that. Great deterrence their your honor. Would the same sentence be imposed for throwing rocks at a judge?

Judge Redd is the same jerk who told a Police Officer in his courtroom that being assaulted is part of a Police Officers job. Nowhere in any job description of a Police Officer that I am aware of, does it say that you will be subjected to assaults by the general public. Same goes for a judge.
I am praying to be present when somebody hops the bar & plants an overhand right in his face. Then we'll see his reaction.

These 7 college students are probably going to cut & past these 5 page essays or clip them off some website. He's making $109,000 a year with weekends, holidays and all the other bennies so he can waste time reading 35 pages of crap from complete idiots who can't follow simple orders from the Police to disperse.
