NEW BEDFORD — One man was stabbed and another was shot in the neck Monday night in the West End, police reported.
The violence erupted just before 8:15 p.m., when police received a report of a home invasion at 33 Sycamore St.
Two men, one with a handgun and both wearing bandannas over their faces, broke into the house; the occupants and several friends were inside, New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silva said.
The suspects and the male occupant began fighting. During the struggle, the gun was accidentally fired and a bullet struck the ceiling.
The men continued to fight and the gun was fired again in a hallway.
No one was hurt inside the house, Lt. Silva said.
The male occupant managed to force the suspects out of the house. They fled in an unknown direction.
One suspect was described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a medium build and wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a red bandanna. Witnesses said he spoke with a Spanish accent.
The second suspect was described as a 6-foot-tall white man with a medium build who wore a black, hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a black bandanna.
A short time after the suspects fled from the house, police responded to a report of a man who was shot in the neck on Parker Street, about a half mile from the home invasion.
The shooting victim was described as a 22-year-old man. He was found lying in the street near 74 Parker St.
He was breathing and conscious and told police he did not see or know who shot him.
Lt. Silva said the victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, then flown to a Boston area hospital. Police listed his injury as serious but not life-threatening.
He was listed in serious but stable condition, police said.
Police could not say whether the home invasion and shooting were connected. The shooting victim's identity was withheld.
At 10:36 p.m., police received a call about a man who was stabbed twice in the torso near the intersection of Chancery and Kempton streets.
The victim was identified as Joseph Gomes, 56, of New Bedford. He was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital, Lt. Silva said. His injuries were listed as serious but not life-threatening.
Police arrested Ryan Souto, 34, of 3 Morgan Terrace in the stabbing.
Mr. Souto, who was at the scene, told police he and Mr. Gomes had been in a fight, but he said he did not stab him.
Mr. Souto also told police that Mr. Gomes cut him with a knife 18 years ago, and said he would hurt him if he saw Mr. Gomes again, Lt. Silva said.
Mr. Souto was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
He was charged in August with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, police said.
