Police Increase Security For Game 7 At Fenway

WBZ) BOSTON In an effort to control crowds around Fenway Park during and after Sunday night's game, Boston Police are going to be restricting access to the area. These precautions are being taken to help avoid the chaos that happened during the 2004 playoffs.

"Regardless of the outcome of tonight's game, we expect full cooperation from the fans," said Boston mayor Tom Menino. "The police are here for your public safety. We look forward to a safe, enjoyable night this evening."

Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove was killed on Oct. 21, 2004 while celebrating a Red Sox playoff series win over the New York Yankees. She was struck by a pepper-pellet shot by Boston Police as thousands of fans packed the streets around the ballpark.

According to Commissioner Ed Davis, the restrictions will be put in place at the top of the seventh inning. "If you do not have a ticket or are not already inside an establishment, you will not be able to gain access to Fenway Park or to the adjacent streets and businesses around Fenway Park."

According to police, they have already talked to bars and colleges in the area. Bars have been asked to not admit patrons after the seventh inning, and students have been warned that if they get arrested, they will face disciplinary action from their colleges.

Hub cops maintain order

Police in riot gear braced for trouble in Kenmore Square last night as a fan took the opportunity to grab a candid shot.

A small army of baton-wielding cops in full riot gear pushed fans back from Fenway Park [map] early this morning as jubilant spectators spilled out into the streets and crowds tried to press in to share in the joy of the win.
There were no immediate reports of injury or vandalism, but within an hour of the game’s end cops had made 12 arrests, mainly for disorderly conduct.
Some in the crowd complained of heavy-handed law enforcement as lines of cops moved revelers back into Kenmore Square. On the other side of the park, cheering fans posed for photos with obliging riot cops who were blocking off Van Ness and Lansdowne streets.
In the initial push to get fans away from the park, a Herald reporter witnessed one cop slap a camera phone from a young fan’s hands as the youth held it up to photograph the crowd. The cop then grabbed the fan by the throat and barked expletives at him, telling him to move on.
Witnesses said one man was almost trampled by a horse as cops pushed fans away from Fenway Park toward Kenmore Square.
“I have a lot of respect for the police because my father is one, but this was an abuse of power,” said a 19-year-old Wentworth Institute of Technology student named Shaun, who would not give his last name.
“This was ridiculous. This is not America. It’s like being confronted by the militia,” said 32-year-old Chris Gallagher of Portsmouth, N.H.
As cops funneled hundreds of supporters onto Beacon Street, two helicopters hovered overhead.
“The cops were ridiculous. They were like a load of storm troopers,” said Evan Stein, 18, a Northeastern University student.
“I guess it was the best thing to do for safety,” said Dan Coriddi, 18. “I have never seen this many cops before. With the helicopters, it feels like we’re in Iraq,” he said.
But tensions appeared to melt away, as the initial push gave way to happy, well-controlled celebrations.
More than 1,000 cops were reportedly deployed amid fears of rioting on the third anniversary of the death of Emerson College junior Victoria Snelgrove.Boston cops and Red Sox [team stats] management had asked people yesterday to channel the “positive passion we think characterizes Red Sox Nation,” win or lose.
“Do not ruin your celebration by hurting yourself or others,” Boston police Commissioner Edward Davis said yesterday. “We will not allow a few excessive revelers to ruin the evening for other fans. We are prepared to take any means necessary to ensure this.”
Davis said his officers were armed with pepper spray, but not the so-called “less-lethal” pepper-ball firearm Boston police used when Snelgrove, 21, was accidentally shot in the face during a fan melee outside Fenway on Oct. 21, 2004, after the Sox took the American League championship. Fenway was dark that night, as the game with the Yankees was played in New York.
Noting that Fenway has not hosted an ALCS Game 7 since 1986, Red Sox spokesman Charles Steinberg said yesterday, “There can’t be a person who wants to see this marred. We all talk about ‘keeping the faith,’ but it works two ways.. .. It’s a time for unity. It’s a time for safety.”

Maybe if these so called "fans" hadn't rioted after every big win by either the Red Sox or the Patriots, there wouldn't have to be that big of a police presence..it wasn't like that in 1986

I guess it was the best thing to do for safety,” said Dan Coriddi, 18. “I have never seen this many cops before. With the helicopters, it feels like we’re in Iraq,” he said.

Maybe you ought to do something for your country and go serve in Iraq. Last time I checked, there were no bombs going off or people shooting at you!! Instead you ought to go thank the cops for keeping your sorry ass safe!!

“I have a lot of respect for the police because my father is one, but this was an abuse of power,” said a 19-year-old Wentworth Institute of Technology student named Shaun, who would not give his last name.

why are you afraid to give your last name? Probably because you know that your father would give you a boot in the ass! Just another stupid college kid that thinks they should be able to trash and vandalize things without any consequences...

Police presence deters possible rioters

Red Sox Nation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been known to celebrate whether they win or lose. Last night was no exception, as students gathered in the Southwest residential area following the Red Sox game seven win.

Crowds gathered around 11:50 p.m. shortly after Cleveland Indian Casey Blake flied out to Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp deep in center field. Cheers and chants were heard all throughout the Southwest residential area, ranging from the classic "Yankees Suck" chant to a crowd of hundreds of people singing Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline."

By 12:30 p.m. hundreds of students emerged from their dorm rooms to join in celebrating the victory. At one point the students took a stab at the police force as one student screamed to the crowd, "Whose school?" The crowd responded back, "Our school."

Students stayed between Berkshire dining hall and JQA while more cautious students watched from afar. Fans rejoiced for approximately an hour, by 1:00 a.m. most people were loosing their voices or losing interest in screaming, as they dispersed without any major incidents.

As early as 8:00 p.m. last night, UMass police along with Massachusetts State Police and Amherst town police began preparing for the potential threat of riots. Around 30 officers on foot were in attendance while several mounted officers patrolled supported their effort. Police officers had blocked off entries into Southwest in hopes of preventing more people from showing up.

Police were extremely tight-lipped, not giving out any details regarding the precautions taken for the night. The only advice given was to "Go home." Police did not want last night to resemble the December 15, 2006 riots a result of the UMass football team's loss to Appalachian State University. That riot involved over 1,800 people with property damage in the hundred thousand dollar range.

According to Chief of Police Barbara O'Connor last night's efforts were successful as they avoided all the problems of the previous year's riots. She ended her statements with an enthusiastic "Go Sox."

Missy Penedo, a UMass junior, said, "rioting is a way to celebrate your team's victory; but if your school is concerned about riots, then they should have a University sanctioned rally or another way for students to safely express their team spirit."

From a different perspective, intoxicated Red Sox fan Tony "Anonymous" said "It is my natural-born right as a United States American and as a devoted fan to the Red Sox Nation to get 'wicked mint pissah hammafaced' and destroy everything in sight to express my undying love for the Boston Red Sox." Tony was ecstatic about the game seven victory last night, as he showed off his Boston Red Sox "B" tattoo while screaming "All Bow Down to Pedroia," at the top of his lungs.

Since 2004, there have been over 145 students who were sanctioned for their participation in the riotous behavior on this campus, up to and including suspension and expulsion from the University.

Students arrested last night will also be processed through the criminal Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in addition to University sanctions.

"Those students who engage in riotous actions that endanger themselves and others are almost always fueled by alcohol consumption," the UMass responsible fan behavior website stated. Since last night was a Sunday, the amount of drunken students was held to a minimum, a dynamic that definitely helped keep the celebrations to a calm level. For more on acceptable fan behavior, students can look on the web at: www.umass.edu/umpd/

Are you f*&3ing kidding me? What ever happened to personal responsibility? Maybe she should tell us her address so we can go over and trash her parents house...all in the name of team spirit of course

A Novel Way of Chronicling Disorderly Conduct

Seventeen people aged 17-25 were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct late Sunday night and/or early Monday morning in the Kenmore Square area following the Boston Red Sox's victory in the American League Championship Series, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

For some of them, the judge has given them a novel sentence to write a lot of sentences:

Roxbury District Court Judge Edward Redd ordered that the remaining seven defendants, most of whom are college students, write a five-page essay detailing what they have each learned from the experience of getting arrested and that they provide the court with written verification that their parents are aware that they have been arrested and charged in connection with this incident. Judge Redd also ordered that they stay away from Fenway Park over the duration of the season. They must provide the essay and parental notification of their arrest at their arraignment on Nov. 8.

I wonder if the judge at Brighton Municipal Court has considered similar sentences as punishment for arrests/convictions in our neighborhood? How about an extra page for extra credit to have bail reduced? How will he mark them down for mis-spellings, grammatical errors, run-ons, and sentence fragments? Five pages... single- or double-spaced? Maximum font size? Punish the writing-challenged by having them share a cell with Bubba? Will he require them to use the spelling "Socks" or "Sox"?

And in order to pass a sentence, must Judge Redd have read them first?
