New Officers Hit Streets of Savannah:87 More Needed

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

There are some new police officers on the streets of Savannah.
Nine new Savannah Chatham Metro Police Officers were sworn in this afternoon. They went through a sixteen week training course before receiving their badges. The officers will hit the streets Tuesday morning.
“Initially they will all go to central precinct for now and if the demand desires to move them we can put them in the most crime ridden areas,” explains Assistant Chief Willie Lovett.
The police department is still short eighty seven officers.
In addition to the swearing in, three current officers were honored with the departments distinguished Medal of Valor. They were Officer Charles Wilson, Advance Police Officer Chad Bote and Star Corporal Randy Powell.

Their site isn't exactly recruitment oriented, there is only a small link at the bottom of the page

My God - have you seen the disqualifying offenses?
Looks like they'll take anybody.

No Convictions or pleas of impersonating a Police Officer in the last 5 years???
No DUI in the last 3?
So I guess if you were convicted 6 years ago of driving a drunk while wearing a cop suit it's OK to join the force. WTF?
Reduced standards just plain suck.

It does suck. When I worked BOP we had a con who had been an officer there and was convicted of dealing drugs on duty. What a great city to visit, too.

LA Copper, does your department have 2 officer cars? I thought I had read that somewhere but was unsure. I know there might be some bias in your answer, but for someone like me just starting out, would it be a worthwhile move? Would I be able to still afford a little beyond the basics of life? I realize it is expensive to live here, but even more so in California overall.

Yes, the vast majority of our patrol cars are like the TV show, Adam-12. There are two officers assigned to a car, mostly because it's too dangerous for one officer cars. There are a few divisions out of the current 19 that occasionally put out one officer cars but that is rare.

I have a friend who was an officer with the VA in Connecticut. He hated it there 'cause it was so boring so he came out to LA last year by himself, just like I did. He is just about to get off probation and he loves it. He lives in a one bedroom apartment just like I did 19 years ago. He is only 25 years old and he's doing just fine.

The basic starting pay in Los Angeles is $54,400, but once you're on the streets, there is so much crime to be handled that you can't help but make some bucks on the overtime and court time.

Believe me, there are plenty of folks that come out here from all over the country and they're able to make it so you could do it too if you try. If not, you can always go back.

When I went for training at FLETC in Glynco Georgia, On one of oour weekends off we went to Savannah and I ran into a officer that grew up in South Boston and was sick of the Political BS here in Mass and went with his friend to Savannah and got on the Police with no problems. He told me that he loves it down there and the cost of living is great. The only thing I saw was that the waterfront downtown area was very nice. but to get to the waterfront you go through the hood. He told me you see alot and you do alot of police work.

This has been written before, somewhere........"'Tis better to get a job in a system that works than sitting around complaining about one that doesn't."

It is an awesome city one of my favorites. Its like Key West you can get a drink to go at a bar a walk the strip along River St. The ocean is not far, Tybee Island. The St. Pattys Day is crazy and rivals Boston's. It is a walking city.
