Currently work for that department. I enjoy working there as of now, it's has it's up's and it's down but everything is entirely what you make of it. If you come in and do your job and don't bitch and moan about it then you shouldn't have any problems.

Posted by: coldsteel

Dont bother wasting your time... You should see some of the fine folks they recruit over there. Some look like they should be in prison not working for one... Just my .02... Good luck.

Posted by: redsox03

Hmmmmmm..... All the guys I saw looked ok when I took the test. I figure it could be a resume builder while I wait for a police job.

They said I should get the date to take th PT test this week. They told us last week that academy is in Jan.

How do the sheriffs departments run their test? do they take place more often than the civil service exam?

Posted by: KozmoKramer

Good Luck wolf9848 and Sox...
MD1218 is right, anything we do in life can be as good or as bad as we make it.
Stay focused and you'll get what your hoping for.

They test more often than the CS. Only 6 other guys took the test with me, but they have had more tests I'm sure. They must give a few tests every time they hire. They said that we were the last group to test until late 2008, but the site and paper say they are still hiring? I would apply soon if your thinking about it.

What do they make a year? How's the morale? How long does it take before you can get out on the road and work details? How long does it take to get into a speciality unit (i.e. K-9, warrants, gang unit, task forces, METROLEC?). How hard is the academy? Thank you.

Sheriffs Dept. in this part of the US work as a CO not a PO like other parts of the country. The academy is 12 weeks. Im sure its military style academy, but not super hard.

Again, you don't -- or shouldn't.

Aced the PT test today. They said they are going to start background checks and I should meet with the Sheriff and have a board in 2 weeks or so.

To correct RedSox03 sheriffs in Massachusetts work as CO's while in northern New England states deputies do all police duties, details, have deputies assigned to task forces, and do prisoner transportation while many counties have totally separate correction departments which staff and run the jails.

I was talking about MA and RI. Where is it they do police work? Maine?

Sheriff's departments in Maine do have patrol divisions, since most towns are too small to have their own police departments. My brother used to work for a sheriff's department in Maine, and they split midnight coverage of the county between them and the state police; half the month the state police covers calls, the other half the sheriff does.

Posted by: MD1218

Hey RedSox, I tried to reply to your PM a while back but your inbox was full so it discarded the message and nothing was sent.

Right now the Sheriff's department is in a tough spot regarding staffing, we're severely understaffed. Our midnight shift af the jail is being going through our draft list(forced overtime) in about 12 days. Our contract states that when you are drafted you are not supposed to be drafted again for 90 days or until the list is expired. So the overtime is readily available for doing. There is a guy that, I kid you not, works 6-7 overtimes a week. He came back to work maybe 3 months ago, after winning a court case(but that's another issue), and has not taken a day off since returning.

The pay isn't bad, you're first year if you put in the overtime you can likely break 50K. The step raises after the 1st raise are pretty good through the 5th step, after that it's basically 4 more steps a small increase in pay until you max out.

If you're in this next academy you are likely coming to the jail, due to our staffing. We have about 230 officers right now and I'd say we have some out due to injury then you have others out on vacation. We also have a number of people that are getting ready to retire as well. If I am not mistaken somewhere around normal staffing numbers for officers is around 270 for the minimum. But, that won't be reached anytime soon. Good things about the jail is that when you get in they like to let you get your feet wet and try out the posts that tend to keep newer guys interested in staying. But give it a few years when you are making better money and more new guys come in and then you may see less of that, unless they like the job that you do or you're in the sheriff's pocket.

Regarding the academy, it's hyped up big time. They will make you think it's balls to the wall action in there, but it's not. Fights do happen, sometimes it's often othertimes is rare, it is up and down. Assaults on officers are not as common right now, due to the fact that the patients are running the asylum in certain aspects. We don't really run the place how a jail should be run. Part of that is the administration other parts are the officers. But, if you are looking for a paycheck, like most people are you will come in and likely ignore the fact that things are not run the way they should be. If you are looking to come in and work then be prepared to deal with some inmates that don't really take a liking to someone doing their job. You'll write reports if thats the case and depending on the supervisors on your floor they will either take appropriate action or they will leave you feeling like they just stepped on your cubes.

But, all in all I can say that I do my job the way I would expect it to be done. Do I want to make a career out of it, certainly not the way it's going in there now. Most people come in here looking to use this as something temporary, 5 years down the road when you are getting paid decent and not working very hard, you might stop looking to better yourself. I would say maybe 70% of the people in there are not happy with where they are and if given a reasonable alternative would likely leave. Just go in and keep your nose clean and you shouldn't have any problems.

RedSox, How long has the process taken? I am thinking about applying. Do you, or anyone else know what the starting pay is? How was the interview? Panel, 1 on 1 etc?

Posted by: redsox03

PM sent.

Good luck Redsox03
Remember, your about to enter county corrections. Politics plays a big deal in these Depts. Your going to work with alot of good people and unfortunatly due to the politics your going to work with some guys who just shouldn't be there. They might look and act like they should be locked up or they are just scared to death. That being said, look out for yourself and don't get caught up in the politics and you will be fine. Aside from the usual jail bulls%# it's a good paying job with great benefits.

Very true... the old saying goes "Do your 8 and hit the gate."

Posted by: slam18944

guys just remember if you can get in trouble on the outside, you can get in trouble on the inside times 2. And yes there are alot of great people there, and some that suck at life. you will be able to pick the good and bad fast, and remember the guys that call you " new jack" and that you need to leave this place, have half your training if they have been on the job more then 5yrs. for the most part. good luck.

I start the academy in a few weeks. It's 12 weeks long. It is not live in, 5:45am-2:30pm from Mon-Fri.
There is going to be a summer academy(from what I hear from the staff) around June. If you are going to apply, you should do it now. Everything took around 4-5 months for me.

1. Send in an application.
2. Take written test.
3. Take pt test.
4. Oral board interview.
5. Background investigation.
6. Interview with the Sheriff.
7. Academy

Good luck.

If you are getting in, do it for a while and get the hell out. Not a good long term job unles you have just given up on the L/E world and/or you have a cronic case of ADD that wont allow you to pass the P/O exam. It is a job though, and it sure beats digging ditches. 18 month probie period, wont see a weekend for at least 13 years and 9 pay steps to max out! If this seems ok to you, welcom to the SCSD, BOSTON....Good Luck
