POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: As part of the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles, the Division of Florida Highway Patrol protects and serves all who travel Florida's roads. The Director of the Florida Highway Patrol is a sworn law enforcement position carrying the rank of Colonel. This Senior Management Service position receives very competitive employment benefits, including free health, life, and disability insurance and generous leave benefits. The Florida Highway Patrol Director is responsible for the overall management of the Florida Highway Patrol. The Patrol has more than 2,300 positions statewide, over two-thirds of which are sworn law enforcement. The Director serves as a liaison between the Florida Highway Patrol and/or department and other state, local and federal agencies. The candidate for this position shall be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation and have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude. The background investigation will include a fingerprint search conducted of local, state and national fingerprint files.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:
10 years of progressively responsible experience working in a large law enforcement agency over 1,000 positions. Five of the required 10 years must be in an executive leadership (Major or above) position.
Candidate must possess excellent leadership, public relations and communication skills.
Ability to demonstrate agency values: service, integrity, courtesy, professionalism, innovation and excellence.
Florida Law Enforcement certified.
Florida Highway Patrol experience.
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field. Experience can substitute for education. Master's Degree preferred.
NOTE: Finalists must be able to pass a physical examination, drug screen, psychological, background check and polygraph. Qualified candidates who are selected to continue in the process can expect a questionnaire and interview process. Candidate must be able to possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment a valid Florida Driver's License. Candidate shall obtain a firearm competence certification.
