Any Departments having problems with Re-loaded ammo

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

My department recently bought several thousand rounds of re-loaded 40 cal ammo. With the current budget and the price of the hot ammo and the need to save money this is what we got. This ammo has been jamming quite frequently with our service weapon. Any other departments out there having the same problem? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Is this your practice ammo or carry ammo?

I seem to recall hearing something about problems with the Wichester White box ammo. I think it was an issue with squib loads and not enough powder.

This is pratice ammo

Reloads, a fools game. Unless you are reloading yourself...your department is running the risk of a injury and potential lawsuits.

I've shot probably 200K of rounds from the whiteboxes and except in my MP5 SD's they have been great performers.

we used Winchester white box ammo today at the range and no complaints here.

it's cheap enough and might be a better option. is the reloaded stuff your shooting made locally ?

I've personally shot probably about 1K rounds of WWB with no problems. Reloads can be a crapshoot - you could be asking for someone elses problems.

I've been told (and have seen from experience) that commercial reloads typically have the cheapest components they can put in it in order to increase profit. The powder burns dirty and leaves the barrel and muzzle coated in crap and they aren't particularly accurate, either.

I shot 50 reloaded rounds through a gun and had more build-up with it than if I had shot ten times as many WWB.

Moral of the story...do your own reloading (which is impractical for a department), or buy good cheap commercial ammo. Wal-mart had the WWB in .40S&W in 100 pack for around $20 last time I checked (which was in August, so it has probably gone up since then).

Assuming it's a department gun with department provided training ammo...I would tread a jam as good free practice.

The Winchester white box Federal American Eagle Or Remington UMC are good quality ammo at a reasonable price.

Stay away from reloads! Almost every agency I know that goes that route has issues from poor function, excessively dirty, and I have seen 3 guns blow. It just is not worth it.
