Wish step is after background check? and Does anyone know wish type of drug test they do? Hair or urine

Posted by: COto50

you should be working on your spelling for the spelling test...... wish??

Posted by: mikey742

I took a urine test but what does it matter if your drug free? And for the first part of your question it depends on the department i had another interview and was offered the job during the interview.

Posted by: COto50

After the background they will probably do an interview if they haven't already done so. Then it will be either the physical or psychological.

I know right, just be honest. If you still do drugs just let them know.

Posted by: dolphingrl

No I don't use any drugs is because I was drinking some Brazilian Diets pills and don't know what they have but some people said that a drug test may come positive, I don't know if is true, but I guess I will just let them know and bring the pills with me..Thanks

They must have been some big pills. Hawheehawhee.

Posted by: JLT770

hair drug tests... they are only for federal jobs that need to prove you've been drug free for at least 2-3 years right?

The biggest part of the test is not pissing on your hand.
Start practicing.

That is incorrect. There are agencies in Mass that do hair testing. Norfolk County Sheriff's Office is one that I know of.

I wouldn't suggest you make a habit of ingesting things of the unknown.

Posted by: Motor23

Diet pills or not I would't be talking about what type of drug test is given. Not to mention you might want to research what the academy thinks about diet pills, try checking into the Agawam academy.

I work for the DOC and yes the testers do test hair.

Posted by: JLT770

so DOC and Sheriff do hair testing...what about Municipal PDs or MSP? weird i thought the only agencies that tested hair for drugs were Federal

Posted by: pahapoika

hair testing for the DOC ?

Posted by: Vindicated

They shaved my chest!!! =P

Yes, hair samples ftw!!!

Posted by: C.O. I

All I know is that the last person that asked about what type of drug test the DOC does got fired(McCarthy40). You need to be careful about what you ask on here becuase they will find out.

OK? What did he do wrong to get kicked out???

Posted by: JLT770

just a hunch, but he was probably using drugs?

Posted by: j809

We do stool samples.

Posted by: Ice

But, do they test for meth?

Posted by: C.O. I

His post speaks for it self...Not to mention they like to make an example of someone in the academy, and it just happen to be him.

Posted by: Vindicated

I don't know about "examples" being made anymore. The DI's searched cars while we doing whatever, and a pretty good size knife was found. The person was still there the next day. The big sign at the entrance was a good enough indicator of what not to bring on the grounds, but oh well...My guess, as they have already stated, they are so short handed, they just can't afford to lose anymore people.

Posted by: C.O. I

Believe me I know what your saying I was up to the academy a few weeks ago for my in service training and i couldnt believe the fat asses they are letting in now....I was sad to see that they totally eleminated the P.T. test prior to getting appointed. What good is a 300lb screw gonna be to me when he has to run from one side of the institution to the other, and he can barely breath or come to my rescue when Im getting my ass handed to me or somene else. God help us!!!!!!!!

Posted by: JLT770

maybe he will collapse on the prisoner...best case scenario

Posted by: 94c

Note to self...

Don't ask MassCops about the easiest way to dispose of a body the week before my wife disappears.

Any one start the process for this january academy yet. Think the interview process starts this monday if i heard the lady from hrd correctly. Waiting for a letter in the mail.

Posted by: shannon

I received a call from the background investigator yesterday. As far as I know, they are getting the background checks done on people for the January academy. I'm not sure what the next step is, but I do know that the investigator gets 1 week to complete the investigation. I suppose I'll hear something soon after that whether it be for the PAT or psych...

Posted by: redsox03

Good luck.

Posted by: BobNorthShore

I am graduation next week, november 16 to br presice, the process goes like this, first you get the pre-screening interview where they ask you a bunch of hypothetical questions related to corrections, then if you are approved to continue you sit dows iwth a background investigator who wil lcome to your house, your place of employment and interview all of your neighbors, also they check your criminal record to ensure your not a felon. When you complete thet step you goto avon to Caritas health services for your drug test, your ekg, 1200 question psychological test, physical ability test and the urine and hair drug test. One week later you will return to Avon to speak with the state psychologist for approximately 45minutes about the psych test. Pending the results of all of these you will get an approval or denial in about a week or 2. If you get in, I cant stress it enough, wear a suit on the first day, something neutral or you will get torn apart. Are they hireing below a score of 89 on the march 14 2007 test? Any one have any questions email me.

Good advice, neutral is key. I wore a suit....with square toed shoes. I got ruined by Gonzo and he told me I looked like Frankenstein. Course, then I got it for laughing.

Posted by: lofu

Just to answer the question posted before about municipal pd's doing hair tests, I had 2 urine tests and one hair test before I got hired at my pd.

Posted by: NytroCop

BobNorthShore basically nailed it. Interview with a 3 person panel (usually a superintdent or dep. sup, Lt., and a Sgt.), then the PAT/Psych/physical, then background investigations, etc.
Good luck. If you have any questions about what to expect shoot a PM my way. I'm graduating with BobNorthShore on Friday and headed to Walpole for my assignment. Again, best of luck to you.

AJ

Posted by: C.O. I

Nytro, Who's going where.....whats the break down????

Posted by: shannon

I just had my background investigation last week... when should I expect to hear about going for the rest of the tests?

Posted by: NytroCop

COI- The assignments portion of the afternoon was after two long days of shaking down MCI-CJ which I'm sure you're aware of. It was about 1600 hours and they said we'd probably be getting out around 1300 at the latest so we were all spent. It really went by in a blur. With that said:

3-6 are going to Bay State CC (!!)
2 are going to Shattuck
about 17-25 are going to MCI-CJ (myself included)
about 20-22 to OCCC
about 10-12 to Mass State Hospital
10-12 to Shirley Med
17-22 to SBCC

I have no idea how accurate those numbers are... like i said that portion of the day was a blur and we justed wanted out of there. We have roughly 130 COI and like 9 CPO's on deck (check the intranet's training page for an accurate count). Any more questions feel free to PM me, not sure how much info I can give.

Anyone get a notice to appear for PAT test for the January academy yet?

Posted by: SouthernDude

I went to pre-screening on November 4, but I haven't heard anything as a result of that yet. I, too, am curious to know if there's anyone else whose heard back from that session.

Posted by: LAWPD79

got my phone call today from HR that my background was coomplete and I am set to move on, have PAT next week

Posted by: SP1173

they tested hair and urine on my class

Posted by: auxiliary22

Anyone else hear anything yet?

Posted by: SouthernDude

BI called my current employer yesterday, so should be hearing something re: PT test w/in a week or so.

Posted by: SouthernDude

And the BI came by the house today. Next step is the PTT. What else does the day entail besides PT testing? The BI said there would be a physician's physical done? What do they test or check?

Posted by: annadad71

HI, I just received my civil service test score and I scored a 90 is this a descent enough score to get called for the next step? Thanks...

Posted by: SouthernDude

I got a 91 and I know guys that scored in the 70's and 80's that have been hired. The BI said yesterday that score isn't mattering much right now. They're just taking everyone they can get so long as background, PT and Psych are ok.

Posted by: SouthernDude

FYI for all the other potential COI applicants: my turnaround has been super fast. Nov. 4 did the prescreening interviews, etc. Nov. 29 had the BI visit my house. Nov. 30 they called to schedule me for the PT/Psych/Drug testing for the following Monday (tomorrow!).

Anyone who's been through the physical, do they test hearing and what's considered disqualifying?

Posted by: NytroCop

yes they test hearing... no i don't know what is considered "qualifying"

Posted by: shannon

I am going for my PAT on thursday... when do you find out if you've passed? Just curious how quick I'll find out about the January academy. HR told me last Friday that I needed to get the PAT done this week for the January academy so I assume it'll be soon.

Posted by: SouthernDude

I went for PT yesterday. HR called me last minute Friday afternoon and said they were trying to get everyone done ASAP. They didn't give me an ETA on when to hear back on definitely being in the January class.

At the clinic they said the drug tests go to Washington and Atlanta for processing, and the interview with the psych doctor won't be until either December 15 or 16. Not sure if they wait for all that to come back before closing the deal or not???

Anybody got a clue?

Posted by: jcgarand

They will finish everything before making an official offer. They may not give you a lot of notice either. I got a phone call on a Tuesday telling me to report to the training academy on Monday.

Posted by: shannon

How am I supposed to give a two week notice if they call last minute like that (if I get an offer)??? That doesn't make much sense seeing as one of the things that they look at in the background investigation is the employment history and are critical about it...

Posted by: BobNorthShore

Hey Shannon, just to give you an idea, I was given the notice that I was attending the academy on September 4th and the academy started on the 10th, It is a good thing that they talk to your employer before this point because my old boss was bullshit.

Posted by: shannon

I have kept my employer informed about the whole process so far... it doesn't make it any easier that I may not be able to give a proper notice! They have already asked me to reschedule my PAT, to which I said no. It's all progressing very quickly now after waiting for over 2 years to get to this stage in the hiring process. I suppose that if I get in it won't really matter that much, right?

Posted by: SouthernDude

Any knowledge of about how long the drug tests take to come back?

Psychological review is scheduled for next weekend at a time TBA.

Thanks for all the great answers everyone!

About this academy in January... Has anyone who took the sept. 29th exam been called to enter this academy. I scored a 94 on the sept. 29 exam but i havent heard a thing....

Posted by: shannon

Just had the PAT today... for the hair they took alot! not just a couple of strands, a lock of hair. So beware anyone with long hair going to do this- they need a sample about the size of a pencil. The woman told me that a guy with dredlocks came in yesterday and she had to take an entire one.

Posted by: KozmoKramer

Jeez Shannon, thats a lot of hair.
What do they do with people like me that get a #1 or #2 blade cut at the barber?

Posted by: COto50

They take it from your armpit.

Posted by: shannon

Yeah, they take it from either under your arm or chest hair... I'm glad that's not my job Someone went a few weeks ago and he was apparently a body builder with no hair- none at all... they sent him home and told him to come back when he grew his hair out. Some of the excuses are ridiculous!

Posted by: afdell

what date did you guys take your exam.. was it the sep. 29th exam to enter this jan academy?

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

tHE LIST HASNT BEEN ESTABLISHED YET FOR THE SEPT 29, 2007 EXAM. HEARD THEY WILL NOT CALL OFF THAT LIST UNTIL AFTER THIS ACADEMY GOES IN. Plus they have a new co test march 2008 so it will probally merge are sept 29 results with the march 2008 results because as little as 75 people showed up for the co test on sept 29

Posted by: KozmoKramer

Code - do you mean in 1 test location, or statewide???

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

At the Quincy test site i counted 75-80 people for CO1 test and 7-9 for Industrail instructor.

I know the other test site was out near west

Posted by: KozmoKramer

Last time I took that exam was around 95' or 96', there had to be 300-400 test takers at the Cosentino Middle School in Haverhill..
Only 75 in Quincy? That's amazing...
Seems people are not as interested in the job as they once were.

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

I remeber taking back around 1998 in sonerville and there was about 400-500 people taking the test and it was competitive. I signed the list 3 times and never heard anything back and I had a score of 95.

Posted by: onetime

Kozmo - I took the test at Constentino also. There were definately more than 75 people there, but I don't know how many where for the make-up police test. I got to the school on the early side. When I got there, there were only about twenty of us, including the industrial instructor crew. I am a little curious to see what happens.

Code Blue - I think things have changed. Rumor has it on this forum, if you get a passing score you will probably get yourself into the mix!!

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

I received a 92 so hopefully that is good enough.

Goodluck to everyone

Posted by: honor12900

Codeblue I took the test about 5 years ago, scored a 90 and recieved 9 cards good luck.

Posted by: Vindicated

If you pass the test, and don't fail any of the pre-employment screening, you'll be going. It has been mentioned before, but they are taking everyone that passes the aforementioned. They have put 4 classes through this year alone, which is unprecedented. Even when you get to the Academy, and screw up, you can still stay (i.e bring weapons on campus)...fairly desperate imo.

Posted by: shannon

I took the test in September 2006 and received 2 cards. I hope to get in one of the next academies (either January or April) My score wasn't all that great and they still contacted me twice.

Posted by: SouthernDude

The process is still moving along very quickly, and all of the guys I know already working DOC echo previous posts that they are severely desparate for people.

Got a call this morning to do the psych interview this coming Saturday.

I'm thinking this will be the last step, although I'm not sure how long the drug screens take to come back. They took the samples last Monday???

Just wait and see. I won't hold my breath since so many in this thread have made it clear that DOC often sends notices weeks, maybe days before the academy starts.

Posted by: LAWPD79

Does anyone have a definate date yet??? or even a ballpark date on the academy

Posted by: SouthernDude

I did the PT/Medical on December 3, and the guy doing the PAT said I had approximately 6 weeks to make sure I was physically prepared for the academy, which would put it in the second week of January. I don't know how accurate that is, but knowing that there will definitely be an academy in January, seems like a good ballpark estimate.

Posted by: anothernubie

If you pass all the tests. Does that mean you are going to the academy?

Or do they take extra bodies just in case. High 80 score. Know of someone working now from two tests ago. Low 80's.

If we don't get in this academy will the new exam, once list it's made will they will jump us.

It seems like DOC was in rush for last two academies.
Has that changed. I know of someone who took last exam still waiting for list. He got point a better than I. I took May exam and was almost invited to last academy screening. I passed prescreening for Jan weeks ago or so I was told, just waiting on call.

Posted by: SouthernDude

My understanding from the BI and DI doing the prescreening was that if you pass ALL prescreening tasks, then you're academy eligible. According to my BI, they're taking anyone they can get, irrespective of score. The problem is if the next academy is budgeted for 150 slots, it's the first 150 who pass regardless of score.

I also know from experience that new exams don't wipe out your score. I took the test over a year ago and got four cards (certified on the last one).

Anything beyond that is beyond me.

Hope that answers any ???.

Posted by: Loyal

it's a good job, best wishes to those taking the test. disregard the negative guys who bad mouth the job. they are the ones to avoid; many of them really should have been screened out - not cut out for it. many good people in the doc, great pay and benefits and can be interesting.

Posted by: SouthernDude

Psych interview went well this past Saturday. Now, just waiting for a letter and a date.

Posted by: WaterPistola

congrats on not being nuts, hope it works out for ya

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

The new CO1 list has been established on MASS Civil service

Good luck to all!!

Posted by: anothernubie

#800 something on the Co1 list. Guess the extention worked. . Must have been a lot of people taking the last exam, the person I knew who took the may exam got three points less on exam and was in the 600's. He's still waiting for letter after all prescreen stuff.

i thought the extention was a good sign they still needed bodies

I can't imagine that many failing/declining ahead on the list and I imagine they already are close to filling the 300 needed. Time to get a better score.

the people that keep saying i got six cards with 90 plus scores are you declining the opportunity or just not getting a chance to prescreen.

Posted by: SouthernDude

I got four cards and didn't sign the list until the fourth one, which came in October. All prescreening steps were completed this past Saturday with the psych interview. Score was 91, but a lot of guys at prescreening had scores in the 70s and 80s.

Posted by: anothernubie

thanks dude... for the insight ...appreciate you keeping this tread alive..
thanks for the honest didn't sign answer..

process just seemed weird, all of the posts of those with higher scores getting all the cards but no job..

good luck.. btw

one last, what is a d-vet??

Posted by: WaterPistola

when you get a card is that for the entire state? or a certain site like CS towns?

Posted by: SouthernDude

It's for the whole state. At prescreening you sign a statement that says you understand you can be assigned to any facility in Mass.

Posted by: anothernubie

Is there a penalty of some sort for not going to assigned spot after academy?

9-months before you can think of transfering? or did I hear wrong

Posted by: WaterPistola

so if you lived in Boston, would they try to locate you near Boston or does it not matter and you could be out west?

Posted by: Barbrady

Quote:

Uh..yeah, the penalty is termination.

Posted by: anothernubie

Is there a fine , laws, etc. regarding going through the academy wasting their time etc. in example : you will never get another opportunity with the DOC.

I know you would not get the offered job of course. You are saying you don't want it , by not appearing to the facility.

I was asking about legal recourse if you go through the academy and like my situation traveling to from Western mass to Plymouth at an hour and a three quarters (one way) just isn't that reasonable for the long term.
a nine month to a year tour perhaps.

Posted by: SargeLorenzo

You signed up knowing damn well that you could end up in this situation. You just pissed away alot of time, our tax dollars, and an academy slot for someone that actually wanted it and was willing to do whatever it takes. Good job.

Posted by: BobNorthShore

Iwent into the DOC not knowing where I was going, You have to accept the possibility of a one hour drive or the very least 30-45 minutes to your facility. I know people that I graduated with that commute an hour and a half each way daily, and to answer whoevers question that was up there, no you can not transfer until your 9 months is up, and that 9 months only gived you the right to submit a requsdt, that in no way guarantees a transfer, that is still contingent upon available jobs and where you stand in seniority of those who want to transfer. Bro' dont be one of those guys, there were a few that graduated with and I would be surprised if they lasted a few more months in this business, if you dont want it please dont waste a spot in the academy.

Plain and simple if you want the job bad enough you will travel to the appointed place.
If you are to lazy to do it you most certainly don't deserve it or want it bad enough.
No one said it was going to be easy!

Posted by: anothernubie

just asking questions for two people..

totally agree. don't want to waste their time.

It was more for the one of us on new list, not signed up to academy.

edit
thanks bob thats all I wanted to know, the reasonable expectations..

Jan 21 is the first day. You should be getting a letter soon

Posted by: SouthernDude

Good to know. Thanks for the reply!

Posted by: LAWPD79

anyone get a letter yet??? I hope they dom't wait till the last minute

Posted by: auxiliary22

Nope, no letter here yet.

Posted by: BobNorthShore

haha good luck, I got my letter 4 days before the academy started back in the begining of september. The DOC's HRD sucks, they run super slow and everything is last minute.
Good luck
Bob D

Posted by: mox

got mine and another buddy got his last week

Posted by: SouthernDude

Nothing here either, although I didn't get a chance to check the mail today (Saturday).

Posted by: d02461

I asked my BI/DI but they couldn't give me an answer... Does anybody here know how long it takes or what the chances are of joining up as an investigator once we finish probation?

Posted by: BobNorthShore

Well d02461 I guess it is when ever you are offered the job, I believe that it a frozen superintendant picked position. To give you an idea, at my institution we have 2 I believe and they are guys with 20+ years in. If I.P.S. is what you are refering to it is the same thing, we have one guy that only has 5 or 6 years in but all others are 10-15+ years in the department.

Posted by: d02461

thanks for the info...bob, whats a frozen superintendent picked mean and you said there were 2 what do they do?

Posted by: SouthernDude

Got the call today for 1/21/08 academy....now gotta call the boss and not looking forward to it.

Posted by: lavalleyb

Nice Work! Congrats! Good luck with the boss!!

(This thread has been extremely informative!)

A couple pages back, someone mentioned those of us who took the written in Sept., probably won't hear anything until after the Jan. 21st academy is in progress. Did I read that right?

Also, the "cards" that are being referred to... are these appt. cards, for steps etc.?

And finally... I read that the physical test has been changed. Does anyone know what it now involves?

Thanks!!

Posted by: LAWPD79

Southern Congrats, See you on the 21st as I got the call today also

Lav, go to the Mass.gov/doc website and go under recruitment, all info you need for the new PAT is on their. I will give you one word of advice. Work on leg strength and endurance as you will need it.

Posted by: auxiliary22

Anyone know what the salary is during the academy, cost of health insurance and if we get the 11% pay increase that the DOC just got? Im just curious, real excited that i was hired and congratulations to all that got in. Thanks

Posted by: Barbrady

Unless it has changed, there is no "trainee pay"...you start the academy day one making CO I pay. Congrats!! to everyone and good luck in you careers in the DOC.

Posted by: LAWPD79

Does anyone know, since day 1 of the academy is on MLK day, do all trainees recieve a comp day??? Since they're are working on a scheduled holiday

Posted by: bsull12

I believe you just get holiday pay.

Posted by: SouthernDude

I also called HR while getting everything settled with my current employer. If you start the 1/21/08 academy, your insurance doesn't become effective until April 1. Mmmmm....$900.00/month Cobra....gotta love it.

Posted by: auxiliary22

No health insurance during the academy?

Posted by: devilcop76

I'm pretty sure I was covered with health insurance dating back to Day 1 of the Academy. They sign you up within the first week, but I can't remember when it actually kicked in.

Posted by: auxiliary22

Anyone hear that they split the academy into two groups? Something like 80 go from 7 to 3 and the other half goes from 1 to 9?

Posted by: lavalleyb

That would be interesting... Anyone going to the academy next week know anything? I wonder how they would decide who goes when...

Posted by: Vindicated

After the first week the schedule was 0800-1600 and 1300-2100, so yes, two groups, and it appeared to be random as to which group you were assigned (even CPO's).
