Amherst College pay rates?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Does anyone have an idea as to what the pay rate is for Amherst College Campus Police Officer and Dispatchers? I thought I remembered seeing the pay rate in the paper a while back, but the descriptions not don’t list it anymore. Just says grade “17” for POs and “15” for Dispatchers. Janitors are grade “13”…

Just wondering if Amherst pays around the same as Smith for Dispatch and Campus Police positions. Smith starts dispatchers around $34k and campus police at $37k! (That’s base salary w/o differential.)

I remember applying at Mt. Holyoke and they were paying about $13 for dispatch and $14ish for officers… you’d think the colleges would be comparable as they are all of the “same caliber,” but it seems that Smith pays a lot better than others.

Amherst College has some of the highest paid professors in the country (~$110k a year), so I’d hope they’d pay well for public safety positions as well.

I worked at NoHo DC and Smith should pay more with the people i saw coming in and out of court...

Smith is the all-girls college, right?

Amherst starts in the mid 30's... .45 Sig with only one magazine. Patrol rifles on the horizon I heard. Tough to get into for the average W/M. Chief Carter is great from what other say. Hope you like driving these:

Smith is higher salary. They have the same union as the rest of the labor on the campus and they share the same Chief with Mt. Holyoke... unlikely to ever get firearms.

The uber-liberalness is to be expected in the Five-College area. I've heard different about the "hairy armpit kinda women." I've been through there going down Rte. 9 but everyone must have been in classes since there weren't too many people walking around. So I can't really argue for or against what you said except for what I've heard.

i went to a party there once...still recovering from seeing absolutely beautiful girls go upstairs with those hairy armpit kinda women...

After working at Amherst College for 2YRs I can say the chief is not all that great. Save yourself the headache and keep looking, unless you are looking for a foot in the door. And the one mag thing is just silly.

Thanks for all the replies.

I hear you about the White male disadvantage... I worked with an officer who is now at Smith and let me just say he got the position because he was NOT a WM... certianly wasn't because of his work ethic or background -- he called out frequently, lost his ability to legally drive a motor vehicle, and was rarely dependable at his previous post.

Couldn't believe smith hired him... I had applied there for a dispatch position and Ominsky shot me down. I had a 4yr degree and was academy trained -- just trying to get my foot-in-the-door.

I hear WNEC is the place to be these days. Seems like a good group of guys. I earned my degree there back when they were unarmed and had a mix of POs and CSOs. Still can't believe AIC is unarmed. That's a tough area.

I don't get this "one mag" thing at Amherst. So... is it one mag in addition to the clip that's in the side-arm or JUST the clip in the pistol itself? Anyone know why this is a hard-and-fast rule there? It doesn't deter me from applying -- hey, at least they HAVE side-arms -- but it is strange, indeed.

The SSPO academy doesn't cover firearms, right? So, do those departments that carry rather officers attend the MCJTC academy instead?

The white male disadvantage, what a bunch of B.S.

Posted by: drloomis82

It's hardly B.S., friend. Open your eyes. "Women and minorities are STRONGLY encouraged to apply."

I guess they do have double mags on the belt, for the standard 3 mags total... my error.

Last I heard, there was talk of a two-week firearms class at the MSPA for SSPO's who needed it. Supposed to be run before or after the academy, but this is just rumor as of right now. For those SSPO's who carry firearms, they usually get their firearms training through their department. We send our recruits to S&W Tactical Pistol and then handle the in-service training and quals ourselves.

Chief Carter is a great guy and I would recommend working for him.
He gets things done, which is rare in campus policing.

good luck.

There is a reason Smith pays so much. People wouldn't put up with the smorgasborg of crap sandwiches that you get presented with there on a daily basis for one penny less. Even with the higher pay they have a larger than average turnover historically, it is truly the department from hell. Keep your sanity and stay away.
