NEW BEDFORD — Two city teens were arrested this week, charged with assaulting a 13-year-old boy while he was riding his bicycle on Parker Street.
New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silva said the suspects confronted the victim at about 9 p.m. Monday and falsely accused him of riding a stolen bicycle. They allegedly punched him twice in the head and ran off with his bicycle.
Police officers Jonathan Plourde and Tom Jupin interviewed the teen at St. Luke's Hospital. He was bleeding from his left ear, which was bruised and swollen, Lt. Silva said.
The boy told the police officers he recognized one of the suspects from school.
Officer Plourde investigated the suspect, a 15-year-old West Side Junior-Senior High School student, and determined the second suspect to be Eric Tyrrell, 17, of 135 Willis St.
Officers Plourde and Jupin found the victim's bicycle at Mr. Tyrrell's house. Mr. Tyrrell denied knowledge the assault, but could only give the officers a blank stare when questioned why the victim's bicycle was in his backyard, Lt. Silva said.
Mr. Tyrrell and the jevenile suspect were charged with unarmed robbery and larceny of property worth less than $250. Mr. Tyrrell was arraigned Tuesday in New Bedford District Court.
