NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man was arrested early Friday after allegedly punching a female acquaintance in the face and threatening her with a knife, according to police.
The woman told police that she was with Andre Cairo, 21, near 943 S. Water St. when he became incensed that she was not interested in a romantic relationship, according to police. She told police that Mr. Cairo punched her in the face when she wouldn't get off the phone and then threatened her with a steak knife, according to police.
She told police that she was able to break free and run to a neighbor's house for help.
Mr. Cairo followed her into the neighbor's house and is alleged to have threatened both with knife, police said. Mr. Cairo forced the woman back out of the house at knife-point after telling the neighbor to keep out of the situation, according to police.
The neighbor reported the incident as soon as Mr. Cairo and the woman left his house, according to police.
Police arrived just before 12:30 a.m.; the woman, who was crying and bleeding from her mouth, immediately asked the officers for help, police said.
Police frisked Mr. Cairo and confiscated a steak knife they found and arrested him.
Mr. Cairo then reportedly broke away from the police and fled, but was recaptured after he crawled out from a hiding place beneath a parked car.
The woman was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where she was treated for facial injuries before being released.
Mr. Cairo was charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and two counts of intimidation of a witness, according to police.
After his arraignment in New Bedford District Court, he was held in lieu of $1,000 cash bail and remains in custody, police said.
Mr. Cairo has a prior conviction for assault and battery, according to Lt. Jeffrey Silva, a spokesman for the department.
