(WBZ) GARDNER Police are looking for a man who robbed a gas station store in Gardner Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the suspect bought a candy bar with a one dollar bill at the Shell Food Mart at 6 Pearson Boulevard. When the clerk opened the cash drawer to give the suspect his change, he reached over the counter and began taking money.

The clerk started to struggle with the suspect and managed to pull off the man's hooded sweatshirt to reveal his face and tattoos. Fearing injury, the clerk then stepped back and allowed the suspect to grab more money before taking off, police said.

The suspect is described as a droopy-eyed young white man, about 6'2" with a thin build and short dirty blond hair.

According to police, the surveillance camera caught two of the suspect's tattoos on his forearms when his sweatshirt was ripped off. The first tattoo is black lettering -- about seven to eight characters -- running lengthwise down his arm. The second tattoo, located on his other arm, is of a large black cross.

At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the lettering "TBL" on the front and a Chicago Bears jersey underneath.

No weapons were used in the robbery, according to police.

Surveillance Photos Generate Leads

GARDNER, Mass. -- A robber who revealed a little too much of his body art was being sought Tuesday after he and his tattoos were identified in surveillance photos, police said.

Police, who released the pictures taken during the robbery of the man and a tattoo of a large black cross on his left forearm, said they received calls from the public identifying the robber as David S. Chirco, 26, of Ashburnham, Mass.

Chirco, police said, went into a Shell Food Mart in Gardner wearing a hooded sweatshirt and grabbed money out of the register after buying a piece of candy Sunday.
During a short struggle, the store clerk was able to pull off the man's sweatshirt to reveal the tattoo of the cross, and seven or eight black letters running the length of his right forearm.

The surveillance tape showed Chirco hanging around the store for a time, waiting for other customers to leave before the robbery, police said.

Police have obtained a warrant charging Chirco with robbery. They said he has a prior criminal record.
