WBZ) REVERE Revere police held back their emotions on Monday as they arrested a man wearing a shirt in support of a teen allegedly involved with a cop's murder.

The incident happened during the city's Columbus Day Parade. It apparently all started when a young man was spotted wearing a "Free Lodie" shirt and got into a fight with some angry residents.

Derek Lodie, 17, is charged with being an accessory before the fact in connection to the murder of Revere Police Officer Daniel Talbot last month.

WBZ's Jim Smith spoke with Pat Starkey, the young man's stepfather, who recounted the situation.

Starkey said his stepson called him and said a group of people had just beaten him up. Starkey drove down to the parade to pick up his stepson when he spotted the group who allegedly assaulted him. Starkey said he asked his stepson to take off his "Free Lodie" shirt, which he then put on to conceal the handgun he was carrying.

When Starkey approached the group of people who allegedly attacked his stepson, he said he too was attacked. According to Starkey, one person pulled out a gun. Starkey allegedly put his hand on the gun under his shirt, and that's when police arrested him.

Starkey said he did not realize what the shirt meant when he put it on. He claims he is not a criminal and agrees with police.

According to Starkey, he has had a lot of problems with his son, who knows Lodi, and is upset he would wear the shirt at all.

Starkey and his wife were placed under arrest after the incident.

Starkey is expected to appear in Chelsea District Court on Wednesday morning. He is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Kinda crude mock up but that's MS paint for ya. I think it would have looked better with a pair of cuffs replacing the **.

I wish I had the ability to make them.
I knew a guy who did screenprint. If i could find someone to make them for free it would be a way to get some money into the memorial fund.
