.223 / 5.56 ammo anyone?

I am finding it harder and harder to find .223 rounds in MA. Some people say the shortage is due to the war, but others call that false. What is the going rate near you for say, one 20rnd box of .223 range ammo? or better yet, a box of 500??

Posted by: Harley387

It's much cheaper to buy online or via catalog.....oh wait.....I forgot, EXCEPT in Massachusetts. Together, we can't.

Posted by: sf3pox1

At one of my local gun stores, 500 rounds of Federal .223 is now 100.00 MORE than it was this time last year. When I asked if it was due to the war, I was told no, it was due to the ammunition companies raising prices, as well as not shipping orders that gun stores make. Not because they dont have enough to supply the demand, but the ammo companies want to keep their stock high.

If you are not buying pallets, what say you!?!?!

Sot? thats enough for like what...a weekend maybe

Posted by: Killjoy

I heard it wasn't a lack of ammo due to the war, but the fact that a shortage of some of the raw materials (most especially brass) make manufacturing the the ammo more expensive. Our department has a six to eight week wait for .223.

Of course the ammo companies could just be sticking it to the consumers.

.223? Fuggettaboutit. May as well take out an equity loan if you're looking for brass case, the cheapest you'll find Wolf or the other steel case is probably $150/500 in a local store and the profit margin from that is barely keeping the store owner off of government cheese. I've been afraid to shoot the .223 that I have now because of the cost of replacing it.

7.62x39 is still hovering around $100/500 for the steel case plinking stuff, AutoSport in Agawam had boxes of Silver Bear for $99.95/500 last week. Strong case for picking yourself up an AK or SKS if you haven't already.

Pretty sad state of affairs when heroin is cheaper and easier to find than ammo.

Online is stil the best deal, except for the nagging little Massachusetts prohibition. Why let a little thing like interstate commerce stand in the way of a gun control agenda? Find a friend in CT, VT, NH or one of the other not-so-progressive states.

+1

Having a brother who lives in Maine has been very handy sometimes.

My department just ordered the 223 rounds out of RI. The dealer told us that there was a shortage of the 223 rounds because of the war. We were advised of approximately a one year back log, however we were able to get 223 re-loads.

Everyone here is correct.

There is a shortage due to the war.

There is a shortage due to China eating up all the raw materials.

There is a shortage because the Massachusetts Attorney General cannot control crime like charging Rosenthal for illegally bringing a gun into the state after making a straw purchase from another state. So they stick it to the law abiding citizens and pat themselves on the back.

Boy, I feel safer spending my hard earned $$$ on ammunition instead of saving a buck or two ordering threw the mail.

One more reason I'm wicked close to buying an Alexander Arms upper in 6.5mm Grendel. What the hell, the ammo is available and not much more than 5.56mm

MassCops bulk purchase ???????? hahhahaa

Gun show in NH this weekend...anyone?

Posted by: Wolfman

Hmm..I blew off the Big E show (and from what I've heard it wasn't worth the price of admission), maybe a trip to NH might be in order. Road trip from WMA?

I think we are going Saturday, the guy down the road and I, being guns and we can test them out on the range here....bring 40 S&W and 9mm and we can have MP5 and Mini Uzi fun!

Anybody know of any current deals on .223/5.56 ammo ???????? I'm looking for 500 or 1000 rounds depending on the deal and quality of the ammo.... Thanks.

Around here, just finding it has become more of an issue than getting a good deal on it. I was at the Walmart in Natick/Framingham and found boxes of Remington for $16.88 for 20 rounds. My buddy cleaned them out and took the last 5 boxes they had. I was also at Dick's in Millbury a few weeks ago and they had remanufactured .223 in boxes of 100. The clerk didn't have a price and I didn't feel like waiting for him to run off to places unknown to find his price binder, but he claims it was "pretty cheap" and they get it in every now and then.

That seems to be the situation in the last year that I have been shooting the rifle. Sometimes I find it and sometimes I can't.

$16.88 for a box of 20 and you BOUGHT it? Are you on crack? I'm assuming Remington UMC...

I paid that much for a box of 50 at Dick's a few months ago, and even that was a little more than I was expecting to pay...

Ironically, Dick's sells the remanufactured stuff for more expensive than the factory UMC (at least when it's on sale).

Ammoman.com is the way to go for bulk (as long as you have an out of state address to ship it to), unless you can find it somewhere else...a lot of price increases went around in December and then again on the 1st of the year.

For clarification purposes, I'm not on crack.

Secondly, my buddy is the one that got smoked on the expensive ammo. (Or at least I thought.) However, I talked to him over the weekend and he explained that the Remington 20 rounds were $9.98 and the $16.88 stuff was Winchester and he bought one box of that. He is an engineer for the Department of Defense and does testing on body armor so any time he can get his hands on some different ammo he buys it to try it out, even if it is for recreational use and he doesn't care how much it costs. (The government pays better than the state so I wouldn't know how that feels.)

I actually don't own the rifle. He owns a DPMS Panther and he happens to be my shooting buddy. So instead of spending the $950 myself, I just shoot his when we go out, so for that reason, I always keep my eyes peeled when I run by Dick's or Walmart. If I happen to see it while I'm out, I'll grab what I can so I'm not shooting all his stuff for free....unless of course the price is outrageous.

Here in Texas there is tons of .223 and any other caliber you need, like 6.8mm SPC at the gun shows and gun shops. Prices are pretty good also. A brick of 200 rounds of .223 was $125.00. Sorry to here my old state (MA) is so progressive now that if the "Founding Fathers" were here they would be disgusted with what has been allowed to take place in MA and across America.

Galewinds - why are you posting under different names?

I'll quote George Washington in this reply. "A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government."
