I was going to wait for the next generation device through Verizon, but I did not want to be a test drive for a new device. The Pocket PC has a track record both through reviews and through several colleagues.

I am just looking to shit can NEXTEL / Sprint. I am sick of their customer service or lack of, I want to upgrade my phone and they want to charge the full price. I have been a customer for almost eight years. You would think they would want to keep their customer base happy but that doesnt seem to be the case.

As far as masscops on WM 5.0+ I know that I had something setup for that before, a text only version. Not sure if it was lost in one of the upgrades. It was only good for viewing not replying or posting.

For now you can try these, let me know how they work....

I got rid of Nextel last May. I live in a decent sized town with lots of businesses and industry. The coverage was awful. The town I work in has less then 50% Nextel coverage on a good day. I thought the service should be better even knowing you will never have 100%. I was with them for 7 years or so. Since the Srpint merger the service went downhill fast.

NOTE: If you want to beat them for the early termination fee, you need to document your complaints with customer service repeatedly and be ready for battle. Many lose this battle. I won. PM or email me for details.

The phone/dc service got so bad I was at the 50% rate for dropped calls. I called, complained, bought new handsets, etc. Nothing worked. That was my ammo for leaving.

I do miss the Direct Connect but with 3 lines (me, mrs. me, and 1 kid) and the data plan for the Pocket PC I am at about $135.00 more per month with 1400 (versus 1000 with Nextel) minutes which has been plenty as both Mrs. me and I use them for work stuff as well. Verizon to Verizon don't count against your monthly minutes.

Physically, the Pocket PC (XV6700) is a little bulky but as usual with Verizon Wireless, the phone coverage is exceptional (almost 100%). The wireless broadband is outstanding. The only flaw I found is the handset is a little finicky. You have to do what's called a soft reset ahout 1 time a day. It's not a big deal though. The XV6700 also will work off of a WiFi connection like many of us have at home. This is good.

With Windows Mobile 5 or 6 you can use mobile Word, Excel, Outlook, etc, and it synchs with your PC/Laptop at home for mail, schedule (key for me!!!) and it will synch with your Exchange Servers at work as well as long as your network admin allows it. You cannot do any power computing (like writing a novel with Mobile Word), but you can work in most documents to edit, etc. I save all documents, photos, etc, to a 2 gig micro SD card.

I was advised by many, including a Verizon rep to stay away from the Treo. I researched the Blackberry, but it seemed complex to set up. My brother uses the Blackberry but has corporate support from his employer. I would have gone with the Blackberry as it is the gold standard for usability and security, but I was uncomfortable without official access to my corprate netork. Also, the features I wanted the most would not be available without purchasing expensive software and obtaining permission to use it. According to our in house geek, using Win Mobile requires only checking a few boxes in the Exchange Server settings and getting the security certificate. It took minutes to setup and transfer all the data (contacts, calendar, email) to my XV6700.

Those are my thoughts.

I am at $135.00 per month, NOT $135.00 more per month. My bad.
