STOUGHTON - Police said two masked men robbed the Citgo gas station at 1002 Park St. at gunpoint Thursday, the ninth robbery in Stoughton since July 1.
Thomas Murphy, the police department’s executive officer, said police arrived just seconds after the robbers got away on foot with $40 from the cash register.
Police said the robbers entered the store at about 8:25 p.m. and demanded money from a store clerk.
One of the robbers then pulled out a silver handgun and jammed the muzzle against the clerk’s hip, police said.
The other robber went around the store counter and took $40 from the cash register, police said.
Both suspects fled on foot toward Turnpike Street. A dog search was unsuccessful.
‘‘They probably more than likely had a getaway vehicle there,’’ Murphy said.
The clerk described the robbers as black men in their mid-20s wearing light-colored shirts and black-and-white masks. One of the suspects was about 6 feet tall, the other about 5 feet 5 inches tall, police said.
Murphy said the clerk became suspicious of the two men entering the store and pressed a panic button, alerting police that a robbery was in progress. The clerk was not hurt, he said.
He said detectives are ‘‘working diligently,’’ piecing together evidence from eight other armed and unarmed robberies in Stoughton since July 1.
‘‘At this point, we haven’t linked any of the robberies,’’ Murphy said. ‘‘It’s unfortunate that we have had a rash of robberies. Thankfully, there has been nobody hurt. As far as property lost, it’s been pretty minimal.’’
Murphy said the department has stepped up patrols. He urged residents and customers to be alert for suspicious activity and to call police immediately.
