NEWRY, Maine (AP) - A Massachusetts couple lunged across the finish line to win the North American Wife Carrying Championship by three-tenths of a second today.
Keith Cardoza and Julia Stoner of Boston posted the second fastest preliminary time over the 278-yard obstacle course, then topped that effort in the final heat.
Cardoza says they came to Sunday River resort in Maine for a mountain bike race, but will remember the weekend for there effort in the wife carrying contest.
For their win, Cardoza and Stoner got a trophy, three times Stoner's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash, which came to $675. They also qualified for the world championships in Finland next July.
