Just wondering if anyone had any information about the DC Metro Police? Any thoughts about deptartment or thoughts about the city??? Any information will be great.

Are you speaking of Metropolitan Police District of Columbia (MPDC) or DC Metro Transit Police?

Don't think you are going to live that close to the city because the cost of living in that area is one of the highest in the nation. Check out officer. c o m for alot of information from those going through the process and those already sworn. I looked into mpdc, transit, and capitol police, but rent is high and so forth, so it would just not be worth it for me.

I have a friend in the academy down there right now. The academy is 6-10 months because they will pull you out to do details when they need bodies for security, traffic and so forth. He seems to like it so far. Cost of living is high, although I personally think it is comparable to the Boston area. Check out officer.com like the guy above me said. There is alot of info about DC Metro on there.

I work here in DC and live in Northern Virginia, the cost of living is a little less than the Boston area. Maryland tends to be a little cheaper. Most officers in this area live somewhere between DC and Baltimore. Stay away from PG County

I am talking about the Metropolitan Police not transit. Also whats PG County?? Thanks a bunch, I am thinking about making the transition down there eventually. I visited the City this past summer and loved it. I want to work someplace busy and I think DC is the place to be.

Really go and check out officer.com and under DC and you will find loads of information. There are alot of LE agencies in the area, MPDC, transit, Capitol, nevermind Federal stuff. Check it out, you won't be let down there.

Prince George's County (PG County). There are also some good local departments here as well. Such as Arlington County, VA PD, Fairfax County, VA PD and Prince William County, VA PD. US Capitol is usually doing continuous testing along with Secret Service UD. Virginia's cost of living is more than Maryland that's why (unless your employed in VA) most local federal leo's live in Maryland. FPS won a lawsuit to have them abolished and the outcome is they are to hire appox. 200 officers but not exactly sure when. That's why I look on usajobs everyday.

Of all the cities I visited, barring the crime of course, it was my favorite city I visited. If you like the center of government its the place to be. The place is crazy like a fox. Paul if you have no ties and dont get home sick I would advise you to look down there. Besides its only an 8 hour drive back to ASSACHUSETTS go for it.

I have lived in Montgomery County, MD for 3 years and I highly recommend the area. The schools are great and the commute to DC is really not that bad.

My friend is a Montgomery County cop in the 6th district. He loves it. I was just there last weekend partying it up. The scenery is spectacular down there He tries to convince me to move every time I go down there.

Sorry to steer this form in yet another direction, but does anyone have any info on the Metro Transit Police, or on the DC Protective Services?

DC Metro is a good department with a long academy and authority in MD, DC and VA.

DC Protective Services is more security focused, although they have arrest authority.

They are very much like the former Boston Municipal Police- primarily city buildings.

Is the Capitol Police like that too?

Also, do you think the Metro Transit cops have good jobs?

Posted by: jndaniel

US Capitol Police is more security oriented than law enforcment. They do alot of law enforcement though. In fact we take our lock-ups to their cells than MPD's because the process is alot faster. Metro Transit is a good job! In fact they are and/or were speculating to federalizing them. Also since you are already trained in VA and MD you can jump ship to many agencies within each respective state.

USCP has its pros and cons. Pro: big depatt
ment with lots of specialized units, dignitary protect, srt, hazmat, investigtions, JTTF, etc. They are well paid and have opportunity for ov ertime. Con: I would bet that most officers are on fixed posts. There are cameras everywhere and alot of micromanagement.
Overall, a great place to start and you can have a good career there.

Metro Transit is a good depertment. The officers I have spoken with at work have been pretty happy. As was pointed out, being certified in three states does have its benefits. You d.o need to look at the pension. Most transit police have a railroad pension which, I have been told, requires 30 years on.

So USCP is more like a Court Officer?
