FAIRHAVEN — A reputed Monte Park gang member who is incarcerated while awaiting trial for murder is now charged with sending an ex-girlfriend threatening letters and telephone messages from jail.
Wayne Miranda, who was arrested in 2005 in the murder of 25-year-old Christopher A. Barros, was charged Sept. 28 with witness intimidation and threats to commit murder.
Fairhaven Police Chief Gary F. Souza said Mr. Miranda wrote several threatening letters to a Fairhaven woman the defendant dated at the time he was arrested for murder in New Bedford. In his letters, Mr. Miranda allegedly accused the woman of "turning her back" on him after his arrest. He also wrote "I hate you for it" and promised "You're gonna pay for it," Chief Souza said.
Mr. Miranda also left numerous angry messages on the woman's cell phone, according to police reports. Some messages said that he had not "forgotten about anything" and warned her that when the government's case against him collapsed, he would come looking for her.
The woman has since taken out a restraining order against Mr. Miranda. The Fairhaven Police Department reported the incidents to the Bristol County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Miranda is jailed at the Bristol County House of Corrections.
"He would be very dangerous to this woman if he were ever released," Chief Souza said.
Mr. Miranda is scheduled to appear Nov. 6 in New Bedford Superior Court. He is charged with murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon.
According to police reports, on Oct. 10, 2005, Mr. Miranda ran from his front porch on 439 Purchase St. in New Bedford, chased Mr. Barros into a neighbor's yard, then shot him twice.
Mr. Barros, an apprentice carpenter who lived on Aires Drive, was pronounced dead later that night at St. Luke's Hospital. Witnesses said the incident started out as an argument between the two men.
