Man Charged With Killing, Incinerating Woman

Video: Police Say Jewelry, Key Found On Property

NEWPORT, N.H. -- Jurors in the trial of a man charged with murdering and incinerating a Goshen, N.H., woman saw jewelry and bone fragments Monday that prosecutors said belonged to the victim.

Police testified that the items were found in a burn pit on the property of Kenneth Carpenter, who has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Edith "Pen" Meyer.

"We sent a trooper to the location to recover the jewelry," State Police Sgt. Russ Lamson said. "When that trooper arrived at the scene, that's when he found the property. He looked at that location and saw what he believed to be human remains."

Prosecutors said that Carpenter killed Meyer because he was angry with her for interfering with an obsessive relationship he was having with Sandra Merritt, a mutual friend.

Meyer disappeared in February 2005, and police tapped Merritt's phone and worked with her in an attempt to incriminate Carpenter. Jurors also heard tapes of those calls, in which Carpenter denies doing anything.

Jury also saw several keys. Police said one that was found in the fire pit unlocks Meyer's post office box.

A key to Meyer's safe deposit box was found taped under a payphone outside a local store, and packaging around it had fabric impressions that match a pair of Carpenter's gloves, police said. Surveillance pictures taken inside the store show Carpenter buying newspapers minutes before police arrived.

Carpenter's ex-wife is expected to testify on Tuesday.
