TAUNTON — Police are looking for a suspect with a previous criminal record they say robbed a Winthrop Street gas station attendant at gunpoint Sunday night.

The suspect's mug shot photo was picked out by the holdup victim — who told police he was “95 percent sure” it was the tall, skinny, dark-skinned man who came up behind him and stuck a black handgun into his side.

The attendant at Mike's Express, 96 Winthrop St., told police he was robbed at 9 p.m. after he finished selling gas to a customer and walked back into the main service station building. He told police the robber quickly followed him in, threatened him with the gun and got away with no more than $50, most of which came out of his own pants pocket.

The reason for the paltry sum, station owner Tony Houeiss said Monday, is that he makes a habit of not keeping a lot of cash on the premises.

The suspect was described as wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and white sneakers and sporting a small, thin mustache. He was last seen running down Porter Street. Houeiss said this is the fourth time since he bought the business last Oct. 2 — exactly a year ago today — that someone has either tried to rob or has robbed it.

“So this is my anniversary,” Houeiss said.

He's also convinced that the individual who robbed the employee Sunday night tried to do the same thing last Wednesday. The difference that night was that it was closing time and the front door had been locked. The would-be robber, he said, tried to pull open the door and left empty-handed.

Houeiss had high praise for city police who he said showed up “right after I got off the phone.” “The response was amazing,” he said. “They had three cruisers here and searched everywhere.”
