HAMPTON FALLS,NH — Two white males described by witnesses as having Russian accents are suspected of robbing the Citizens Bank on Route 1 Monday afternoon.Police are still searching for the men who robbed the bank of an undisclosed amount of cash shortly before 1 p.m., according to Hampton Falls Police Chief Robert Dirsa.
"They showed the teller a note," said Dirsa, noting that no weapon was shown. "The teller gave them the money, and they fled out the door and into the woods."
This is the second time in two months that the Citizens Bank in Hampton Falls was robbed.
Police said they believe the two suspects, both wearing Boston Red Sox caps, fled into the woods behind the bank, where they had a vehicle waiting for them on Depot Road.
A witness spotted two men fleeing the area and getting into a 2000 or 2001 model white Grand Am with Massachusetts plates.
Police confirmed the witness description of the men after reviewing the surveillance camera inside the bank.
One male had blond hair and was wearing a baggy white sweatshirt and a white Red Sox cap. The other male had dark hair and was wearing a light-colored shirt and black Red Sox cap.
Both were described to be in their mid-20s with an average height of 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches.
Dirsa said bank tellers said the men had accents described as Russian.
State police and local area police spent the afternoon searching for the men.
A state police dog searched the woods while a helicopter flew above the marsh area.
"We picked up somewhat of a scent and tracked it for a while, but then lost it," said State Police Troop A Cmdr. Robert Quinn.
The bank was blocked off and closed for the remainder of the day, and the Lincoln Akerman Elementary School was put on lock-down as a precaution.
Police declinedcomment on whether the robbery was linked to a robbery of a Citizens Bank in Manchester on Saturday.
The male suspects in that crime were described as being in their mid-20s, one wearing a white and one wearing a black Red Sox cap.
"It's an open investigation, and we are not ruling anything out," Quinn said.
Citizens Bank in Hampton Falls was also robbed on July 27. No suspect has been arrested in the case. "That robbery is still under investigation," Dirsa said. "But we don't believe they are related at all."
The July 27 suspect was described as white male, 6 feet tall and of average build wearing a tattered ski mask and a thigh-length yellow rain slicker.
That suspect also fled into the woods behind the parking lot and was later reported to have gotten into a vehicle and driven away.
Dirsa said the case is being investigated by its department, the Portsmouth office of the FBI, and the State Police Troop A.
