CONCORD – It was just another day on the job for Merrimack officers Lt. Rich Desmond and Sgt. Daniel Edmonds when, on May 11, 2006, they saved a woman's life.
Mary Levesque, 74, was trapped inside her bedroom after a faulty fan sparked a fire that filled her bedroom with smoke. Desmond and Edwards were first on the scene, along with Merrimack firefighter Rick Gagne. They kicked in the back door and found Levesque huddled on the floor. Together they worked to carry her to safety, then returned to search for others.
They saved Levesque's dog, as well.
Last night the three men were among 16 officers recognized for similar actions during the New Hampshire Congressional Law Enforcement Awards, held at the Police Standards and Training Academy building.
One by one, recipients took turns standing at attention in the front of the auditorium, scenarios of their harrowing rescues or traffic stops recounted to an audience of their family and peers.
"Tonight is a recognition of diligent, extraordinary and, yes, for some, heroic service," said Hampton Police Officer Richard Bateman, representing the awards committee.
