CHULA VISTA, Calif. --
Authorities rescued three people trapped in a suspected smuggler's van early Friday, NBC 7/39 reported.
Firefighters, paramedics and U.S. Border Patrol agents were called to an AM/PM gas station at 800 Palomar St. after a customer heard a man shouting for help in Spanish. The cries came from a hidden compartment under a van parked at the station.
Rescuers pulled two adults and a child from the compartment. All three were taken to Scripps Chula Vista Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, officials said.
The people were trapped in "some sort of storage compartment in the under carriage of the vehicle," said Chula Vista Battalion Chief Jeff Peter. "They were welded in with a steel plate that had been installed on the underside of the vehicle."
Investigators said the people were apparently smuggled across the international border at San Ysidro. The smuggler then abandoned the van with the people trapped inside.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are looking into the matter. A spokesperson for ICE said this type of situation is extremely rare in San Diego County.
