CHICAGO, Ill. — A Chicago Police officer fatally shot a 15-year-old male Thursday night on the Southeast Side.
South Chicago District tactical officers in an unmarked car heard a gunshot near East 87th Street and South Commercial Avenue about 9:45 p.m. The officers continued westbound on East 87th Street and saw the teen fire a second shot, police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden said.
After chasing the shooter on South Exchange Avenue, the teen turned toward the officers with a gun in his hand.
"Police told the man several times to drop the weapon, and instead he pointed the gun at the officer," Camden said.
One of the officers fired his weapon and the teen was hit in the upper body, Camden said. No one else was injured, Camden said.
Meliton Recendez, of the 2900 block of East 87th Street, was pronounced at 12:06 a.m. Friday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
The teen was responsible for the first initial gunshot heard by the officers, according to Camden, who said a .357 revolver was recovered near the body of the gunman.
Police also found man near East 87th Street and South Commercial Avenue with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.
A round table discussion is scheduled for Friday.
