IRWINTON, Ga. -- Irwinton Police Chief C.J. Croy has been indicted on two felony counts of theft by taking by a Wilkinson County grand jury. Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright says the 53-year-old Croy is accused of using police department monies to clear a bad check written by his stepson and to pay a personal bill. Bright says the misused funds were obtained through donations made to the police department by Wal-Mart customers. He said they totaled $593.92. The crimes were alleged to have occurred between September 27th and October 10th last year. Bright says that Irwinton Mayor Edna Brown and the City Council had already suspended Croy for 30 days for setting up a police department checking account without their knowledge. He said Croy has served the suspension and is out of jail on a $5,000 bond.
