SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A pair of fugitives in a newly purchased Mercedes Benz led San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies on a 70-mile chase late Tuesday that stretched from San Dimas to Banning.
The pair a man and woman surrendered after they ran out of gas on 22nd Street in Banning.
Robert Thompson, 36, was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and for being a parolee wanted back in custody.
Kristin Walker, 25, of Rancho Cucamonga was arrested on a $100,000 warrant for drug violations, sheriff's Sgt. Greg Kreps said.
"They just got out of the car with their hands up and were taken into custody," he said.
A deputy tried to pull over the 1989 Mercedes driven by Thompson at 11:47 p.m. at the corner of 6th Street and Vineyard Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga.
The deputy attempted to do so because the vehicle's license-plate number was not on file.
Deputies later discovered the vehicle had just been purchased by Walker.
Thompson refused to pull over and sped off toward the westbound 10 Freeway.
He crossed into Los Angeles County, heading north on Highway 57, and got off at Via Verde in San Dimas, Kreps said.
He then got back on the 10, but this time heading east.
The California Highway Patrol took over the chase at County Line Road in Yucaipa.
"They only chased him for a short time and they canceled the pursuit," Kreps said. "The sheriff's helicopter stayed with it and (the pilot) put out that the car stopped at 22nd Street."
Deputies had pulled out of the chase, but were still in the area when the pilot announced the pair had finally stopped.
When deputies found the vehicle, the pair were still inside.
The chase never exceeded 70 mph.
No crashes or injuries were reported.
Deputies found $5,000 and paperwork in the vehicle indicating Walker was the owner of the 1989 Mercedes.
