Fall River - As police continue to investigate Monday’s shooting of Anthony Alberto inside the Stafford Road business that bears his name, a new twist has emerged.
Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Bernier said Officer Paul Furtado was dispatched to the office of Antonio F. Alberto Insurance & Real Estate at 420 Stafford Road at 4:29 a.m. Wednesday in response to a fire.
Bernier said the fire is considered suspicious. Furtado noticed that a window on the north side of the building had been damaged.
Bernier said Furtado reported seeing “heavy smoke and sparks” coming from a telephone pole that stands on the property adjacent to the parking lot for the nearby shopping plaza.
Bernier said an approximate 5-foot section of wires running along the pole was exposed. He said Furtado noted that sparks falling from the wires likely ignited mulch, in turn catching two bushes on fire.
He said at first look, Furtado deemed the small blaze to be suspicious.
“The officer suspects they cut the power to bypass the burglar alarm, but that is unconfirmed at this time,” Bernier said.
He added that four fire engines responded to the scene and that no cause of the fire has officially been determined.
Later in the day, Bernier added that city Fire Marshall Deputy William Silvia would be checking with the responding units to further investigate, while Bernier, who serves as the Police Department’s fire investigator, said he would be in contact with National Grid for any information it may be able to provide on the exact timing of the fire.
Alberto suffered a gunshot wound to the head area Monday after reportedly going to meet clients at his office in the Maplewood section of the city.
Family members have said that in addition to the gunshot wound, Alberto also required stitches for hand wounds after they were tie-wrapped with zip-lock ties. They have also said he was bound by duct tape.
Bernier said Wednesday that the investigation into the incident is continuing and provided no further information other than to say that Alberto was interviewed by Fall River police Tuesday night.

Fall River - Details of the shooting of real estate agent Antonio Alberto emerged Monday following the arrest of a man accused of attempting to rob the Stafford Road business.
Peter Chamberlin, 45, of 15 Johnswood Road, Roslindale, was held without bail during a hearing Monday morning in Second District Court.
Chamberlin faces seven felony charges, including assault to murder, firearm-armed; armed and masked robbery; carrying a firearm without a license; kidnapping; entering at night for a felony, armed, person in fear; discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building; and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of ammunition without an FID card.
Chamberlin is expected back in court today for his arraignment and hearing on a motion to hold a dangerousness hearing.
Chamberlin is accused of setting up an appointment with Alberto on the evening of Sept. 24 and then taking the real estate agent hostage — possibly with the help of two other men — in an effort to obtain cash that Chamberlin believed was locked in a safe on the property.
According to police reports compiled in the days after the shooting, Alberto was scheduled to meet with a man named “Marco” and his wife on the evening of Sept. 24.
Alberto told police that he returned to his office at 420 Stafford Road around 7 p.m. with the expectation to meet with the pair. As he waited, Alberto told police, he made a phone call to an business partner that was interrupted by a knock on the back door at about 7:30 p.m.
Alberto said that when he opened the back door, three men rushed into the building, one pointing a gun at his face and saying, “Give me the f--king money, Tony.”
Alberto said he was then forced into the building’s basement toward a vault area Alberto used for storage. The office is located in a building formerly occupied by two banks.
While in the vault area, Alberto said, the three men continued to berate him, demanding he open the safe and threatening to kill him. Alberto said his hands were bound with plastic zip ties and his eyes and mouth were covered with duct tape.
Alberto said that despite the continued demands of Chamberlin and the other two men, he repeatedly told the group the safes in the building were inoperable.
The police report indicates that Chamberlin, not pleased with Alberto’s response, continued to pressure him, eventually placing a gun in Alberto’s mouth.
He then told the assailants there may be some cash in a drawer upstairs related to the insurance side of the business. That sent one of the men upstairs, who later yelled back that there was no cash.
Chamberlin, angered, then put the gun to the back of Alberto’s head and said “You’re gonna die for f--king money.”
Alberto then made an attempt to save himself.
Feeling the zip ties coming loose, Alberto told police, he proceeded to reach to the back of his head and grab the gun. Alberto said he managed to get his finger inside the trigger guard of the gun and attempted to twist the gun away from Chamberlin’s grip, before being struck by the third man in the back of the head with a blunt object.
The third suspect then jumped on Alberto’s head, holding him down.
His finger bleeding from the encounter, Alberto said he then began pleading for his life and praying out loud, as he heard the man who went upstairs yell that he found something.
Not pleased with the amount found upstairs and Alberto’s praying, Chamberlin became further enraged, saying “You can pray all you f--king want, I’m Jewish.”
Shortly after, Chamberlin fired his gun, striking Alberto in the back of the head. He said he then laid on the floor, “pretending to be dead,” until he heard the three men leave.
Feeling it was safe to go upstairs, Alberto made his way to one of the office phones on the ground level and proceeded to dial 911 with his nose.
After police arrived and Alberto provided an initial statement he was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital where he was treated and released less than 12 hours later.
With Alberto out of the hospital, police were able to use information they learned through his interview along with telephone records to identify the man initially known as “Marco” and track down Chamberlin.
According to police reports Chamberlin had made at least 10 calls to Alberto from his own cell phone indicating interest in various properties being listed by Alberto. The calls included messages left on Alberto’s phone.
After linking Chamberlin to the calls, Alberto said the voice messages matched the sound Chamberlin’s voice from the Monday night incident and later picked him out of a photo array.
After identifying Chamberlin as the prime suspect, police then received information Saturday that he was in Worcester. After a request for assistance, police in that city then arrested Chamberlin, where he was held until picked up by Fall River detectives.
